Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de um estudo sobre a variação do tepe em onset complexo -como em p[ɾ]incesa ~ p[ø]incesa -, na comunidade de fala do Rio de Janeiro, a partir da análise de dados de produção espontânea de 08 falantes de uma amostra de fala composta por adolescentes excluídos socialmente (Amostra EJLA/PEUL). O objetivo deste estudo é verificar a atuação de condicionamentos estruturais e sociais para a realização do tepe em onset complexo, bem como investigar a possível atuação de condicionamentos lexicais. Partindo dos pressupostos teóricos da Sociolinguística Variacionista (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006HERZOG, [1968) e dos Modelos Baseados no Uso (BYBEE, 2001(BYBEE, , 2010PIERREHUMBERT, 2003 PIERREHUMBERT, , 2016, foram analisadas todas as ocorrências de itens com a variável em oito entrevistas selecionadas, sendo os dados levantados submetidos ao programa Rbrul (modelo de efeitos mistos). Os percentuais de ausência do tepe revelam um comportamento semelhante entre os indivíduos da Amostra EJLA e indivíduos de outro grupo e com maior inserção social (Amostra Censo 1980, cf. MOLLICA;PAIVA, 1991), o que aponta para a possibilidade de a variável não ser influenciada por fatores sociais ou de os condicionamentos estruturais atuarem da mesma forma em toda a comunidade de fala. Não foram observados condicionamentos fonéticos para a realização da variável, sendo apenas a variável linguística "tonicidade" selecionada pelo programa. A partir da análise dos itens mais frequentes na amostra, aponta-se para a possibilidade de haver diferentes organizações dos itens que contêm o tepe: itens lexicais com alto índice de ausência de tepe podem indicar uma centralidade nos exemplares sem tepe, ao passo que os com baixa probabilidade e ocorrência categórica do tepe terão a representação dominante ou central com o tepe.
