Mudanças culturais constituem um grande desafio à redução de impactos ambientais e ao ideal da convivência com o semiárido, especialmente nas zonas urbanas, onde há um distanciamento maior com relação ao ambiente do semiárido. O presente estudo teve como objetivo diagnosticar os principais problemas socioambientais do bairro Jardim Sant’ana, cidade de Sousa, semiárido da Paraíba, e avaliar a percepção da população em relação à cultura ambiental. A pesquisa tem uma abordagem qualiquantitativa, utilizando-se de pressupostos teóricos da pesquisa fenomenológica e observação participante. Foram identificados 12 (doze) impactos ambientais, na sua maioria de caráter grave, evidenciando uma forte pressão na área estudada. No entanto, a população só identifica 8 (oito) deles. Elaborou-se um diagnóstico socioambiental, que demonstrou que os moradores não tem conhecimento das características do seu ambiente e, principalmente, os seus problemas ambientais. Os resultados são discutidos considerando-se as formas de combater os problemas, incentivar a educação ambiental e o potencial de construir políticas públicas considerando-se a realidade local.
