Intercropping of beet with cowpea-vegetable is increasing in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. However, its management requires scientific information and technologies pertaining to space arrangement and adequate fertilization with roostertree. The present study evaluated the agronomic/biological performance of the beet and cowpea-vegetable intercropping system with different amounts of roostertree and spatial arrangements of the component cultures. We established a 4 × 3 factorial completely randomized design with four blocks. The first factor was the amount of roostertree biomass incorporated into the soil (20, 35, 50, and 65 t ha-1 in dry matter), while the second was the spatial arrangement of beet rows alternated with cowpea rows (2:2, 3:3, and 4:4). We evaluated the total, commercial, and classified productivities of beet roots, as well as the number of green pods per m2, green and dry pod productivities, the number of green grains per pod, the weight of 100 green grains, and green and dry grain productive of cowpea. The agronomic efficiency of the intercropping system was evaluated by the land equivalent ratio, productive efficiency index, and score of the canonical variable z. The results showed no significant interactions among the amounts of roostertree biomass and spatial arrangements for any evaluated trait or agronomic index. The highest agronomic efficiency of the intercropping system was obtained with 65 t ha-1 of roostertree biomass and the 2:2 spatial arrangements.
A B S T R A C Tzhe study objective was to evaluate methods to overcome coat dormancy in flamboyant seeds. Conducted in a completely randomized design with twelve treatments and four replicates of 25 seeds, being: Witness (T1); Immersion in water for five minutes at 100 °C (T2), 80 °C (T3) and 65 °C (T4); Immersion in concentrated sulfuric acid (97%) for five (T5) and ten minutes (T6); Mechanical scarification (T7); Stand in the opposite region of the embryo (T8); Cut of the integument (T9); Immersion for fifteen minutes in alcohol vinegars (T10), red wine (T11) and white wine (T12). The percentages of germination and hard and dead seeds, germination speed index, root length, seedling height, number of leaves and dry mass of the seedlings were evaluated. The highest rates of germination were provided, respectively, by tegument cutting, immersion in water at 100 °C, mechanical scarification and peeling. None of the methods of breaking dormancy employed had any effect on seedling height, number of leaves and root length. The most efficient treatments in the dormancy breaking of flamboyant seeds were immersion in water at 100 °C, mechanical scarification, peeling and tegument cutting.

Understanding the responses of seeds to the detriment of the interaction of external factors is one of the challenges of research, especially with little explored species such as Sonchus oleraceus L. Thus, the objective was to investigate the effect of the cultivation system, storage time and temperature on the physiological potential of seeds of Sonchus oleraceus L. Seeds were used of two cultivation systems (organic and conventional) in three storage times (0, 90 and 180 days) and submitted at two temperatures (20 and 30 ºC). For the evaluation of germination, the first count, germination percentage and germination speed index were determined, while root length and hypocotyl growth were determined for the evaluation of seedling growth. The first count was statistically higher than 180 days in both crops and temperatures. The seeds of conventional cultivation obtained higher germination percentage and germination speed index at 30 ºC. There was a reduction in root and hypocotyl growth at 180 days, especially at 20 °C. The cultivation environment influences the seed quality of Sonchus oleraceus L. during storage.
