Sulphate reduction rates (SRR) and nitrogen fixation rates (NFR) associated with isolated roots, rhizomes and sediment from the rhizosphere of the marine macrophytes Zostera noltii and Spartina maritima, and the presence and distribution of Bacteria on the roots and rhizomes, were investigated. Between 1% and 3% of the surface area of the roots and rhizomes of both macrophytes were colonized by Bacteria. Bacteria on the surfaces of S. maritima roots and rhizomes were evenly distributed, while the distribution of Bacteria on Z. noltii roots and rhizomes was patchy. Root- and rhizome-associated SRR and NFR were always higher than rates in the bulk sediment. In particular, nitrogen fixation associated with the roots and rhizomes was 41-650-fold higher than in the bulk sediment. Despite the fact that sulphate reduction was elevated on roots and rhizomes compared with bulk sediment, the contribution of plant-associated sulphate reduction to overall sulphate reduction was small (< or =11%). In contrast, nitrogen fixation associated with the roots and rhizomes accounted for 31% and 91% of the nitrogen fixed in the rhizosphere of Z. noltii and S. maritima respectively. In addition, plant-associated nitrogen fixation could supply 37-1,613% of the nitrogen needed by the sulphate-reducing community. Sucrose stimulated nitrogen fixation and sulphate reduction significantly in the root and rhizome compartments of both macrophytes, but not in the bulk sediment.
Investigations on the species composition, phenology, and abundance of Chloropidae in grassland were carried out in Jutland, Denmark 1979–1982. Oscinella frit and O. pusilla were predominant species contributing 90% and 7%, respectively, of the total (N = 150,000); evidently, they are the most important stem boring pests of agricultural grass in Denmark. O. frit was numerous in most grass areas, annual as well as perennial; obviously, perennial pastures were less attractive for oviposition than annual and mown grass. O. pusilla was especially abundant in perennial pastures, rather common in perennial mown grass fields, but few in numbers in annual grass. The behaviour of O. frit and O. pusilla is discussed; in contrast to O. frit, O. pusilla seems to be stationary not taking off regularly. Hence O. pusilla may build up local populations characterized by few emigrations and immigrations. In Denmark the number of annual generations of O. frit and O. pusilla are three and two, respectively. In some years the third generation of O. frit is partial. The developmental time of O. frit in terms of day‐degrees above 7 °C is discussed; apparently, in Denmark the annual temperature sums are close to the values required for the completion of three annual generations of this species.
Studies on the flight behaviour of Oscinella vastator (Curt.), O. pusilla (Mg), and O. frit (L.) were carried out in a 6 year old crop of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in Jutland, Denmark. Blue sticky traps were exposed at three heights: 0 cm, 20 cm, and 40 cm above ground level. O. frit was trapped in equal numbers at all levels, but a significantly lower number of O. vastator and O. pusilla was trapped above the crop than at ground level. It is concluded that O. vastator and O. pusilla are stationary in the vegetation, not taking off regularly like O. frit. The consequences of this difference in flight behaviour are discussed; annual crops are invaded primarily by O. frit, whereas O. vastator and O. pusilla in the course of some generations may build up large populations in perennial crops. In perennial crops the value of water trap catches seems dubious.
