Few philosophical topics are as intertwined with gender questions as the topic of love, which moved center-stage in the diverse literary and philosophical productions of the Renaissance. Situated in the rich cultural environment of Cinquecento, Italy, Tullia d'Aragona's Dialogo della Infinit2 d'Amore offers not only a unique contribution to Renaissance theories of love, but also forces a reexamination of the aims and methods of communication, and provokes a reflection on philosophy's very own (male) self-conception.Tullia d'Aragona (ca. 1510-1556), the once-famous Roman writer and courtesan of the Italian Renaissance, has not yet received much attention in modern philosophic discourse. While research on d'Aragona's life and work has become an integral part of such disciplines as literature, history, and gender studies, her work has rarely been recognized as relevant to the canon of philosophy. Besides a few edited translations of the Dialogo della Infinith d'Amore (Dialogue on the Infinity of Love) in a number of languages, and some mention in broader scoped studies on Renaissance culture and theories of love, no single extensive study centers around a detailed interpretation of the philosophical import of d'Aragona's work. In this paper, I hope to show that this is an unjustified situation, and that Tullia d'Aragona's work deserves to be more than just an absent discourse in philosophy.
