Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent materials for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, a polymer-stabilized blue phase (PSBP) I film with the self-organized 3D nanostructure is fabricated, and an electrically tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) is achieved. Interestingly, the large-scale shift of the PBG covering the entire visible spectrum is found to be asymmetric and can be modulated by the polarity and magnitude of bias voltage. Moreover, to demonstrate the usability in optical devices, blue phase lasers are developed by doping the PSBP material with fluorescent dyes. And mirrorless lasing emission with electrically tunable wavelength is observed. This self-assembled soft material is prospective to produce large-scale electrically responsive photonic crystals in facile fabrication process and has enormous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as 3D tunable lasers, reflective full-color displays, or photonic integrated circuits.

Background:Although coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the major cardiovascular diseases, risk factors associated with the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of CHD patients remain unclear. The present study was designed to determine the profile and significant factors of the HRQoL in CHD patients.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural communities of Fangshan District, Beijing, China. Socio-demographic, lifestyle, and comorbidity information of CHD patients were collected by a structured questionnaire and medical records. HRQoL was measured using European Quality of Life 5-dimensions (EQ-5D) scale and EQ Visual Analog Scale (EQ-VAS). Multiple linear and logistic regressions were performed to explore the association of potential risk factors with HRQoL scores and each EQ-5D, respectively.Results:Totally, 1928 CHD patients (mean age 61.64 ± 9.24 years; female:male = 2.4:1) were enrolled in the study. The mean score of EQ-5D index and EQ-VAS were 0.889 ± 0.172 and 71.56 ± 17.65, respectively. Multiple linear regression revealed that marital status, physical activity, moderate alcohol drinking, and family's population were positive independent correlates of EQ-VAS, whereas diabetes mellitus and stroke were negative independent correlates (all P < 0.05). Age and stroke were negatively while physical activity, moderate alcohol drinking, family's population and household income were positively correlated with EQ-5D index (all P < 0.05) independently. In addition, each of the five HRQoL dimensions had various specific determinants, including obesity, underweight, smoking or education.Conclusions:Findings of the study highlight certain socio-demographic, lifestyle factors, and comorbid stroke or diabetes mellitus as correlates of HRQoL in Chinese CHD patients. Large-scale cohort studies should be carried out to confirm our results in the future.

Optical intensity-driven self-organized helical superstructures were found to exhibit reversibly photodynamical photonic bandgaps in wavelength shifting, bandwidth broadening and reflectance enhancing in single-layer system.

Previously, we reported the phenomenon of genome diversification in Salmonella typhimurium LT7, i.e., individual strains derived from LT7 kept changing the genome structure by inversions, translocations, duplications, and mutations. To elucidate the genetic basis, we sequenced selected genes of the mismatch repair (MMR) system for correlations between MMR defects and genome diversification. We chose S. typhimurium LT7 mutants 8111F2 and 9052D1 for mut gene sequence analyses and found that both mutants had a deletion of one of three tandem 6-bp repeats, GCTGGC GCTGGC GCTGGC, within mutL, which was designated 6 bpDeltamutL. mutS and mutH genes were unchanged in the mutants analyzed. Some sublines of 8111F2 and 9052D1 spontaneously stopped the genome diversification process at certain stages during single-colony restreaking passages, and in these strains the 6 bpDeltamutL genotype also became wild-type mutL. We conclude that conversion between mutL and 6 bpDeltamutL occurs spontaneously and that transient defects of mutL facilitate genome diversification without leading to the accumulation of multiple detrimental genetic changes. Spontaneous conversion between mutL and 6 bpDeltamutL may be an important mechanism used by bacteria to regulate genetic stability in adaptation to changing environments.

Swine may be the principal reservoir for human HEV infection in rural southern China.

The L-EPS can further improve the biomechanical fixation strength of EPS in the osteoporotic sheep. The screw elastic matching with surrounding bone is helpful to distribute stress uniformly, relieve the stress shielding effect, and strengthen the screw-bone interface. Although the experience with the L-EPS is very limited and preliminary, results to date indicate that it is of value in treating patients with osteoporosis and warrants further study.

Only few studies have compared hepatic steatosis quantification between CT and mDIXON-Quant. We are the first to determine the diagnostic performance of unenhanced CT for quantitatively assessing mild hepatic steatosis, in reference to magnetic resonance mDIXON-Quant imaging.
