Closure of a temporary stoma is generally eagerly awaited, signifying a return to normality. Yet ostomists may not always appreciate that the surgery to close their stoma is associated with risk of postoperative complications which can cause considerable morbidity. The main problems experienced postoperatively are achieving normal bowel functioning, risk of small bowel obstruction and wound infection which can all delay patients' recovery. Claire Taylor and Lindsey Morgan explain that patients undergoing this procedure need to be adequately informed by the colorectal team so they have realistic expectations before they have surgery. They should also be offered continued nursing support after the operation to allay anxiety and provide appropriate advice.
