Resumo: Detentoras de valores civilizatórios que expressam sua importância para a sociedade brasileira como um todo, busca-se discutir, neste artigo, as religiões de matrizes africanas como um contínuo com o continente africano. Esse cenário nos permitiu abordar, a partir do discurso de adeptos da região de Marabá, no estado do Pará, a necessidade de essas religiões ocuparem espaços públicos e de controle social para o avanço da igualdade racial. Para tanto, utiliza-se da história oral no registro das falas de seus participantes e da pesquisa participante pela articulação acadêmica e política. O trabalho analisa as diferentes formas de representação e identidade religiosas dialogando com a construção de políticas públicas e as formas de atuação das quais a população negra se utiliza para manter sua relação com a ancestralidade africana pelas comunidades tradicionais de terreiros, evidenciando a necessidade de construir nos espaços públicos outras narrativas.Palavras-chave: Religiões afro em Marabá; Espaços públicos; Valores civilizatórios afro-brasileiros; Representação social.
