En este artículo se analizan las estrategias que Abelardo de Carlos y Almansa utilizó para colocar a La Ilustración Española y Americana en el mercado editorial mexicano. Destaca la competencia editorial que significó para ese editor la labor de los impresores franceses que distribuían con éxito El Correo de Ultramar. Muestra la trascendencia de las redes de periodistas, libreros, editores y escritores peninsulares residentes en México para promover el consumo, venta, circulación y distribución de la revista española, así como las relaciones entre miembros de la Real Academia Española, con sus pares de la Academia Mexicana, que alentaron tanto la lectura de esa publicación periódica como la colaboración de sus miembros.Palabras clave: La Ilustración Española y Americana en México.
En este capítulo se revisa la polémica albergada en las páginas de Excélsior y del semanario Ilustrado de El Universal ocasionada por un texto biográfico sobre Porfirio Díaz. En el estudio, se establece que, más que la vida de Díaz, es la figura de Manuel González el centro de la discusión entre Carleton Beals, autor de Porfirio Díaz. Dictator of Mexico, y Salvador Quevedo y Zubieta, autor de El general Manuel González y su gobierno. La controversia Beals-Quevedo es otro ejemplo de la tensión entre el revisionismo del pasado y el afán comercial de Excélsior.
