El estudio identifica los principales usos y conocimientos tradicionales asociados al capulí (Prunus serotina) en la parroquia García Moreno, provincia de Tungurahua, Ecuador. Este árbol es valorizado principalmente para: (i) Alimento de temporada para consumo familiar; (ii) Comida complementaria para crianza de especies menores; (iii) Medicina ancestral; (iv) Delimitación predial en cercas vivas; (iv) Sombra para proteger el pasto de corte; y, (v) Distracción para cuidado de niños en campo. A pesar de registrar una importante y múltiple valorización, esta especie sufre un constante proceso de deterioro amenazando su permanencia en los predios campesinos. La tala de árboles y la disminución en su consumo por falta de mano de obra para la cosecha ponen en riesgo este importante recurso biológico. Frente a estas particularidades, se hace énfasis en la necesidad del repoblamiento de la especie, generación de valor agregado mediante transformación del producto y el impulso de investigaciones que determinen diseños adecuados para su uso como componente de sistemas agroforestales.
