Objective: To evaluate the presence, positioning and diameter of the posterior superior alveolar artery in relation to the alveolar ridge using cone beam computed tomography.Materials and Methods: 100 computed tomography scans (200 maxillary sinuses) of patients (50 males and 50 females) undergoing maxillary sinus lift treatment were included in this study. The presence of the artery, its diameter and position in relation to the maxillary sinus, and the distance between the alveolar ridge and the inferior base of the artery were evaluated. Results:The artery was detected in 45% of cases, and 46.67% were located in the external cortical in the maxillary sinus. The mean distance between the alveolar crest and the inferior base of the posterior superior alveolar artery was 15.5 ± 4.7mm. The mean diameter of the posterior superior alveolar artery was 0.9 ± 0.3mm. No correlation was found between artery diameter and patient age (Pearson correlation test r = 0.12, p = 0.26). No correlation was also found between the distance to the artery and age (Pearson correlation test r = 0.04, p = 0.69). Conclusions:Within the limits of this study it can be concluded that posterior superior alveolar artery was found with relatively large frequency in the maxillary sinus, mainly in the external cortical, presenting a considerable diameter. From this perspective, careful preoperative analysis is recommended to avoid bleeding in the maxillary sinus lift procedure.
A mordida profunda, ou sobremordida exagerada, é uma má-oclusão que apresenta etiologia multifatorial, que necessita de um diagnóstico preciso para se obter um correto plano de tratamento, objetivando um bom resultado estético e funcional. Portanto, é um problema com o qual nos deparamos com certa frequência nos tratamentos ortodônticos. Uma má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 2, é caracterizada por dentes frontais superiores retrocedidos (inclinados em direção ao céu da boca) e um overbite aumentado (sobremordida profunda), que pode causar problemas orais e afetar a aparência. Esse problema pode ser corrigido pelo uso de aparelhos dentários especiais (aparelhos funcionais) que movem os dentes frontais para a frente e alteram o crescimento das mandíbulas superiores ou inferiores, ou de ambos. A maioria dos aparelhos de aparelhos funcionais é removível e essa abordagem de tratamento geralmente não exige a extração de nenhum dente permanente. Tratamento adicional com aparelhos fixos pode ser necessário para garantir o melhor resultado. A mecânica de tratamento para a correção da mordida profunda dependerá da sua etiologia, crescimento esperado e dimensão vertical. A abordagem do tratamento da mordida profunda pode seguir em três linhas, a intrusão de dentes anteriores, a extrusão de dentes posteriores ou a associação das duas técnicas. Através de revisão de literatura o presente estudo visou salientar a importância do tratamento precoce desta máloclusão, evitando prejuízo futuro para o sistema estomatognático, aumentando também o sucesso e estabilidade pós tratamento.
Sialolithiasis is relatively common in dental practice. It most commonly affects the major salivary glands, particularly the submandibular glands. Young adults between the third and fourth decades of life are the most affected. The swelling of the oral floor region, caused by salivary retention due to the sialolith within the salivary duct, as well as the observation of its presence by transparency can clinically characterize it. Additionally, radiopaque imaging can determine the final diagnosis. Most of the time, the treatment is surgical. The purpose of this article is to present the case of a patient with painful symptoms caused by a sialolithiasis in the sublingual duct. Surgical removal was performed. The patient has been followed with no signs of recurrence.
