Children of different ages respond by exclusion in trials of auditory-visual conditional discriminations. However, the learning of these relations can depend on a variety of factors, such as age, vocabulary size and amount of exposure to the emerging relation. The present study assessed learning by exclusion in children aged between 16 and 24 months, using learning probes with and without mask that required either selection or rejection topographies. Familiar word-object conditional discriminations were taught to compose the baseline. Exclusion, learning, and control probes were used to test emergence, learning, and control by novelty in name-referent relations. Participants responded by exclusion but did not demonstrate consistent learning across all probes. Best performance occurred in learning probes that required control by selection. In the rejection probes, the participants consistently selected the novel stimulus. These results suggest that the type of probe used influences observed performance.
ABSTRACTResponding by exclusion is a robust phenomenon in vocabulary learning. However, there is not enough evidence of children under 36 months of age learning emerging relationships by exclusion. This study sought to verify whether name-object relations could be learned after a single exclusion trial and after repeated exposure to similar exclusion trials. In a day-care center for children and toddlers, we requested eight participants, aged from 27 to 36 months, to select objects conditionally to spoken words in an auditory-visual matching-to-sample task. The general procedure involved teaching baseline auditory-visual relations (BL); exclusion, learning, and control probes; a naming test and a verbal repertoire assessment. When participants did not meet the BL learning criterion, an additional teaching procedure was conducted, which involved progressively increasing the number of comparison stimuli and decreasing the number of trials. If the learning probes criterion was not met, participants were re-exposed to the general procedure. Throughout the experiment, each participant was re-exposed to the general procedure and four children were re-exposed to the additional BL teaching procedure. Three out of eight participants learned the object-name relations and performance was high on the control probes. The largest number of exposures to trials similar to exclusion trials increased the likelihood of lear...
Responding by exclusion is a robust response pattern; however, regular occurrence of responses that attest the name-object conditional relation does not correspond to consistent learning of the relation. This study aimed to evaluate learning of name-object relations, after emergence of the conditional relation in responding by exclusion, through discrimination probes presented to 19 children between 14 and 25 months old. Familiar name-object conditional stimuli were taught as baseline. Control, exclusion, and discrimination probes found control by stimulus novelty, emergence of name-object relation, and learning of emergent relation, respectively. If the learning of the emergent relation did not occur, the teaching by exclusion was inserted. Six participants responded by exclusion. Discrimination probes attested learning of two name-object relations by three participants. One participant's responses were consistent with learning two relations after teaching of emergent name-object relations. Discrimination probes were found to be an effective measure for learning of emergent name-object relations by small children.
