The skills used in all areas and stages of education are important also in geographical education. The concept of skill is important for the individual’s life at all stages of Education. Geographical skills contribute to the abilit y of individuals to think critically and solve problems. They also enable the individual to think at a metacognitive level. In this study, it was aimed to show the degree to which secondary geography textbooks gain the level of use of map skills. Maps are communication tools that show where and how positional information is found. One of the most important materials to be used in geographical education are Maps. The map, which will appeal to the studen t, should benefit the individuals in their daily life by an inductive method. Individuals with map skills can transfer this directly into their lives. They can both read the immediate environment in which they live and have global mapping skills and positio n analysis skills. In this study, skills, geographical skills, geography textbooks were analysed to determine their conceptual framework by focusing on map usage skills. This research is a qualitative one , with research data of 9, 10, 11 and 12 grade textbooks printed forthe 2017-2018 to 2019-2020 academic ye ar s. The process of collecting and analyzing geography textbooks used the document review technique.
The aim of this study was to analyze the attainments of map literacy skills in the 2018 Social Studies course curriculum according to the learning areas and examine the applicability of the program. The research sought answers to the following questions: 1. How is the distribution of attainments related to map literacy skills in the 2018 Social Studies course curriculum by class levels and learning areas? 2. What is the level attainments associated wi th map literacy in the 2018 Social Studies course curriculum related to the lower dimensions of map skills in the high school geography curriculum? 3. What is the applicability level of map literacy skills in the 2018 Social Studies course curriculum for student-centered learning activities? Looking at the results of the study, it was found that at fourth-grade level, there was an improvement in the global connections learning area, where four skills were included with map writing in People and Places and Environments. At fifth-grade level, it was found there were two attainments linked to map literacy in People Places and Environments, while there was one attainment in Global Connections. According to the results of the research, it was found that at sixth-grade level, there were four achievements in People, Places and Environments, one achievement in Production, Distribution and Consumption, and three achievements related to map literacy skills in Global Connections. Finally, at the seventh-grade level, it was found there were two achievements related to map literacy skills in the field of learning People Places and Environments. When Social Studies textbooks were examined, it was observed that map literacy skills and application activities were at a limited level. In Social Studies course learning areas, the level of applicability in terms of map literacy skills is quite high. The recommendations to be developed on this issue are to teach both teachers and students about Geographic Information Systems, where students can find application areas, support map literacy skills.
Bu araştırma, sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin hizmet öncesinde alan bilgisi, meslek bilgisi ve öğretim programı amaçları bazında alınan eğitimin yeterlilik düzeyini belirlemeyi ve bu alanlara yönelik yeni bir eğitime ihtiyaç duyma düzeyini tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma, betimsel nitelikte ilişkisel tarama modelinde nicel bir araştırmadır. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin hizmet öncesi aldıkları eğitimleri çeşitli değişkenlere göre karşılaştıran veri toplama aracı, Hatay ilinde görev yapan sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerine uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleri; “sosyal bilgiler” konularında ve “meslek bilgisi” konularında yeni bir eğitime “orta düzeyde” ihtiyaçları olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleri, bilgi teknolojisi, medya ve ekonomi gibi konular ile proje geliştirme, bilgi-teknolojilerinin etkin kullanımı ve özel gereksinimli bireyleri dikkate alan uygulamalara yönelik eğitime ihtiyaçları olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Bu doğrultuda, öğretmenlerin hizmet içi ihtiyaçları tespit edilerek hizmet öncesi bağlamında fakültelerdeki lisans ders programlarının bu ihtiyaç analizlerine göre güncellenmesi önerilmektedir.
