Resumo: Los lodos urbanos constituyen un problema de primer orden en las ciudades. Por eso, hay una necesidad de reducirlos, reciclarlos y reutilizarlos de una forma respetuosa con el medio ambiente. La aplicación en la producción agropecuaria de los lodos urbanos provee numerosos beneficios como acondicionador físico del suelo: mejora la porosidad y la infiltración, y aumenta la resistencia a la erosión. La comparación entre las legislaciones de Brasil, España e EUA es importante para ver donde esta práctica está más desarrollada.Palavras-chave: legislación; suelos agrícolas; lodos urbanos. INTRODUCIÓN.Lodos son una mezcla de agua y sólidos generados en estaciones de depuración originadas de la separación de aguas residuales urbanas. Con gran cantidad de materia orgánica, su estructura mejora propiedades físicas y químicas del suelo, como densidad aparente, porosidad, el agua y la capacidad de intercambio catiónico, aireación y drenaje, las comunidades microbianas y la fauna del suelo, contribuyendo así a la supresión de la enfermedad, y la reducción de la erosión del suelo. Actúa también como una fuente de alimento para los microorganismos.Los lodos son gestionados respectando los principios de la política de residuos relativo a protección del medio ambiente y de la salud humana. La problemática de los lodos de depuración dependen de su composición y de la concentración de metales pesados, cuando dejan de ser producto y se convierten en residuo y causa prejuicios en su utilización. Por eso hay legislaciones que imponen límites de concentraciones de elementos en estos lodos para preservar y recuperar el suelo cuando usado para fines agrícolas. Cuando las sustancias están por encima de los límites máximos, hay la necesitad en adoptar precauciones especiales en medidas posteriores.Entre los destinos de los lodos, las soluciones más extendidas a nivel mundial son los vertederos controlados, incineración y el uso agrícola. Cuando el objetivo de la eliminación de los lodos es a través de uso agrícola, existe una regulación, en que normalmente se contempla las limitaciones de la aplicación agrícola de estos residuos en función de sus niveles de elementos contaminantes, especialmente metales pesados.
