Safety performance indicators are the parameters used for monitoring and assessing safety performance. Such factors are determined based on available safety databases, collected on government level (in Poland Civil Aviation Authority) or by aircraft operators. Aircraft system failure during different flight phases can cause an accident or an incident. Polish Civil Aviation Authority between other data bases manages two important ones called: European Coordination Centre for Aviation Incident Reporting Systems (ECCAIRS) and Aircraft Continuing Airworthiness Monitoring (ACAM).General Aviation (GA) operates mainly aircraft with MTOM<5700 kg powered by the single piston engine. At present, reliability of GA aircraft systems in Poland is unknown. Increasing size of this fleet in Poland requires taking necessary measures in order to establish safety risks and safety performance targets for GA fleet. The authors have performed processing of the data included in available databases analysing airframe failures based on criteria like: phases of flight, ATA chapters concerning aircraft systems and the category of occurrence. The goal of this article is to present method of the current reliability of GA aircraft systems assessment. The results of this analysis can support the decisions of supervisory authorities in the areas where security threats are most important also can help production organizations in identification of the aircraft systems, which required design changes.
Purpose Europe has adopted Flight Path 2050 (FP 2050) challenge with an objective of 90 per cent of the travelers being able to reach door-to-door European destinations within 4 hours by 2050. The aim can be achieved by reliable, well-organized small aircraft transport (SAT). Analysis of the currently operating small aircraft operational reliability data will support the development of future aircraft designs as well as reliability and safety requirements necessary for commercial operations. Design/methodology/approach The paper provides results of a statistical analysis of small aircraft current operations based on the reported events contained in the Database named European Coordination Centre for Aviation Incident Reporting Systems database. It presents identified safety indicators and focuses particularly on those related to the aviation technology. Findings It has been found that certain airframe and powerplant systems have the biggest influence on flight safety. Practical implications Multidisciplinary analysis of the operational and aircraft components reliability data will help in a proper preparation of the SAT supporting facilities, a design process of new aircraft and improvements of the existing airframe and powerplant systems. Originality/value Presented results are valuable for further developments of the statistical tools facilitating new product introduction.
Along with the increase in air traffic, the number of reported aviation events also increases. The authors have performed processing of the data included in the European Coordination Centre for Aviation Incident Reporting Systems (ECCAIRS) analyzing large aircraft reliability and safety of their operations considering events according to ICAO aviation occurrence categories. The airframe systems are the biggest contributor to the total number of reported events which occurred on the Polish registered large aircraft in the years 2008–2018. Failures of these systems caused more than 23% of total reported aviation events. Based on the ECCAIRS data, determination of occurrence categories essential for aviation safety was performed with the assessment of their safety risk level. Also, detailed airframe systems' reliability study was carried out in order to assess the real reason of their failures. Airframe systems' faults were assigned to the specific ATA chapters and then to each of their sections. The most frequently occurring defects of each unit of the particular airframe system were identified. The results of this analysis may support the decisions of supervisory authorities in the areas where security threats are most important. They can also help aircraft operators with identification of the airframe units which require special attention, and as support in improvement of safety analysis. Identification of significant parts due to the frequency of malfunctions of the system components can be a support for designers who have the information needed to improve the design of specific airframe system.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
