The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the congruence of self and ideal-self utilizing a Q-sort and occupational choices made by potential four-year college students and potential junior college terminal students. To determine if there was a significant difference between the means of Q-sort scores for the groups, t's were calculated. The chi-square test of significance between the groups in their selection of realistic occupational goals indicated that a significantly greater number of the four-year college groups selected realistic occupational goals, .01 level. A greater number of subjects selected occupational goals above their aptitude level and in inappropriate occupational areas than the number of subjects who chose occupations below their aptitude level.MONG THE PROBLEMS of concern to A many American high school students are the decisions they must make concerning their plans for post-high school education and their eventual entry into the world of work. They are faced with the problem of selecting (1) a field of occupation, (2) an educational program that will prepare them for their field, and (3) an institution that will provide the opportunity for them to achieve the necessary education.
A group leader is one who assumes the responsibility for a group dealing with interpersonal relationships. The leader is committed to a belief in the dignity and personal worth of each member of a group with whom he works. While demanding the freedom to function as a professional, he also accepts the responsibilities this freedom implies and defends the rights and freedom of his group members. He maintains integrity in his relationships with other professionals and the public. He does not use his specialized knowledge to take personal advantage of group members, nor does he permit himself to be used by others for purposes inconsistent with his own ethical standards. The group leader is expected to abide by and practice the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association and the American Personnel and Guidance Association. He is also expected to practice the following ethical standards that were developed for, and are more directly applicable to, working with groups.
A discussion of counselor trainee needs with particular attention given to the need to feel successful in the counseling practicum. The difficulties encountered by the trainee when he comes from the teaching ranks in overcoming his authoritarian approach to students and the necessity of providing some skills earlier in counselor education so the trainee is able to interpret success when it occurs in counseling. There is a tendency for trainees to resort to the use of tests or some other device that will place them in the position of an authority with clients. It was suggested that individual or group counseling be required of all trainees in an effort to provide better insight and understanding of needs.
