AbstractEffect of reduced impact logging in some sapotaceae species in the eastern amazon. Effect of logging, held in 1997, on structure and dynamics of some Sapotaceae species were evaluated in a dense tropical rain forest located in the municipality of Moju, Pará (02º 12' 26" S e 48º 48' 14" W). Two hundred ha out of 1,050 ha forest area were selectively logged for timber (23 m 3 ha -1 logging intensity) in 1997.Twenty-two 0.5 ha permanent sample plots (11 ha sample) were established and all trees with dbh ≥ 10 cm were identified and measured for dbh in 1995 (before logging), 1998 and 2010 (after logging). Parameters evaluated were Density (De) and Basal area (G-m 2 ha -1). Sapotaceae presented a significant reduction of 7.7% on tree density (p=0.0147), and an dominance increase of 1.4% (p=0.7851). In the same period, decreases in density and basal area were observed to Pouteria laurifolia (Gomes) Radlk. Huberi did not recover its original density. On the other hand, three new species of the family were recorded in the focused period.
Models to predict tree survival and mortality can help to understand vegetation dynamics and to predict effects of climate change on native forests. The objective of the present study was to use Artificial Neural Networks, based on the competition index and climatic and categorical variables, to predict tree survival and mortality in Semideciduous Seasonal Forests in the Atlantic Forest biome. Numerical and categorical trees variables, in permanent plots, were used. The Agricultural Reference Index for Drought (ARID) and the distance-dependent competition index were the variables used. The overall efficiency of classification by ANNs was higher than 92% and 93% in the training and test, respectively. The accuracy for classification and number of surviving trees was above 99% in the test and in training for all ANNs. The classification accuracy of the number of dead trees was low. The mortality accuracy rate (10.96% for training and 13.76% for the test) was higher with the ANN 4, which considers the climatic variable and the competition index. The individual tree-level model integrates dendrometric and meteorological variables, representing a new step for modeling tree survival in the Atlantic Forest biome.
Abstract
Prognosis of the diameter distribution in the Amazon by using artificial neural networks and cellular automata. The analysis of the diameter distribution is indispensable for forest management since it subsidizes the assessment of the remaining stocks and of wood harvest. This work aimed to project the diameter distribution by using artificial neural networks (ANN) and cellular automata (CA). In 1979, selective harvest was performed with an intensity of 72.5 m3 ha-1 in an area of 64 ha in the Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (state of Pará, Brazil). In the distribution projection, ANNs were used as a rule for CA evolution, considering the probability of projection's trees and their closest neighbors. The projection from all the analyzed periods showed no statistical difference at 5% of significance in relation to the observed one, which demonstrates that the projection followed the tendency of the distribution's dynamics. ANN and CA are efficient and can be used to design the diameter distribution during the cutting cycle.
