This article analyses the origins, development and organisation of cross-union, company-based trade union networks in transnational corporations in the metal and chemical industries in Brazil. Collectively developed by local, national, foreign and international trade union organisations, this kind of union action was introduced in the country in the early 2000s as a way to connect local labour representatives organising workers in different locations within the same company. Networks strengthen local labour power and stimulate transnational connections. Promoting solidarity among workers across multiple factories, they offer the perspective for a global unionism connected to shop-floor organisation. Despite these achievements, networks face important challenges. Power imbalances, the reliance on restrictive social dialogue arrangements and the compromise with traditional structures limit the reach of the strategy. KEY WORDS: globalisation; trade unions; new labour transnationalism; trade union networks; Brazil
abstract:The debate on public sociology is spreading in Brazil, a country potentially responsive to Burawoy's proposals for two reasons: as one of the most unequal countries on the planet, Brazil offers much historical material for reflexive and socially engaged sociology to bring to the non-academic public; and Brazil has a critical and militant sociology that strongly interacts with public sociology. This article provides a 'different' reading, through the lens of public sociology of the intellectual and political course of two representatives of this critical and militant sociology: Florestan Fernandes and Francisco de Oliveira.
Abstract: This essay considers collective bargaining with respect to the safety of plastic-injecting machinery, focusing on the negotiating process between the traditional parties. This process emerges as an innovative approach to management-employee relations in Brazil, due to the direct, bipartite dialogue between representatives of both sides. Lastly, specific aspects of the bargaining process are highlighted for their potential to bring about significant developments in terms of corporate culture and labor relations.
The theoretical assumption of this paper is that social, political and economical dimensions should be tackled in one single frame in order to grasp the simultaneous effect of both the idea of the deconstruction of class-homogeneity and the overture to the private field in late modernity. The example chosen to explore these interconnections is picked from case studies carried out in São Paulo, Brazil, at different times throughout the last two decades. What these cases share in common is the use of new methods of work organization and quality-programs stemming from Just-in-time techniques and 'Lean Production'. Global companies and business discourse today are profiting from the discarding of public commitments (including unions and their appeal to collective action) to undertake an actual colonization of the private world at work. From this perspective, the role of the female labour force is critical because much of the content those managerial policies propagated seem to 'fit' their domestic attributes and social dispositions. It is assumed that the historical context of national industrial relations is also a key variable in explaining the actual pervasiveness of privatization of life in industrial organizations. The structure of the paper is built as follows: the first section will briefly address the privatization of life's topic within the public space debate in Brazil. Then, a comprehensive account of the country's recent political history is provided. The subsequent section explores industrial work reorganization. The final section summarizes the main findings and points to a theoretical balance of the discussion developed.
In recent years, the idea of “new labor internationalism” has inspired controversy. The concrete developments emphasized by this debate (the emergence of “global unionism”) combined new strategies and traditional forms of union organization, confusing the established frameworks. In search of the nature of these hybrid arrangements, we explore what lies behind the “invention” of the global union as a new type of union organization, noting how the ideas of rooted transnationalism and network organization offered partial solutions to conflicts that permeate the relations between corporate and union powers. In particular, we discuss the emergence of global agreements and union networks in transnational corporations in manufacturing industries, and their adoption in Brazil. Our conclusion is that although the institutionalization of global unions has been hitherto precarious and contested, it has coherently articulated seemingly contradictory principles. However, given these hesitant compromises and tentative foundations, a critical and multiscalar sensibility is vital to unraveling the significance of the transnational practices of trade unions today.
