Although there were differences in the specific implementation of colonial administration in Kenya and Ghana, both countries also shared similar experiences. The legacy of colonial administration in both cases generated similar problems that challenged the post-independent regimes of each. The following discussion is an overview of the colonial administration in each country and its legacy in terms of the demands that it placed upon the emerging nation.
KENYAThe Kenyan colonial experience began in 1895 when Britain established a protectorate over the country (domination actually began in 1888 when the Imperial East Africa Company was chartered to operate in Kenya). A wave of white settlement was initiated under British government encouragement. The settler community grew from 13 in 1901 to over 60,000 by the end of the colonial period. Most of these settlers moved into the most fertile part of the country -the Kenya Highlands.
