By realizing in thin films a tensile stress state, superconductivity of 13 K was introduced into FeTe, a nonsuperconducting parent compound of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, with a transition temperature higher than that of its superconducting isostructural counterpart FeSe. For these tensile stressed films, superconductivity is accompanied by a softening of the first-order magnetic and structural phase transition, and also, the in-plane extension and out-of-plane contraction are universal in all FeTe films independent of the sign of the lattice mismatch, either positive or negative. Moreover, the correlations were found to exist between the transition temperatures and the tetrahedra bond angles in these thin films.

It is well known that the calcium ion is essential for maintaining life activities in living organisms, and it is of great significance to detect the intracellular calcium concentration. For the detection of calcium ions, we developed a new type of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs), whose surface was modified by ethylenebis­(oxyethylenenitrilo)­tetraacetic acid (EGTA) through a secondary hydrothermal method. This is a simple and convenient chemical preparation method because all reactions are carried out in the same autoclave, and the final product is directly the EGTA-modified CDs. The CDs exhibit bright blue fluorescence, and as the calcium concentration increases, the fluorescence intensity drops sharply. The fluorescence quenching correlates with the concentration of calcium ions and has a good linearity in the range of 15–300 μM with a detection limit of 0.38 μM. The experimental results confirmed that the detection of calcium ions by CDs is a static fluorescence quenching process. Also, cytotoxicity test and cellular imaging experiments have shown that the CDs are nontoxic and biocompatible.

BackgroundRecent studies revealed that erythropoietin (EPO) has tissue-protective effects in the heart by increasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and attenuating myocardial fibrosis in ischemia models. In this study, we investigated the effect of EPO on ventricular remodeling and blood vessel growth in diabetic rats.MethodsMale SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control rats, streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, and diabetic rats treated with 1000 U/kg EPO by subcutaneous injection once per week. Twelve weeks later, echocardiography was conducted, and blood samples were collected for counting of peripheral blood endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Myocardial tissues were collected, quantitative real-time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to detect the mRNA expression of VEGF and EPO-receptor (EPOR), and Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression of VEGF and EPOR. VEGF, EPOR, transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and CD31 levels in the myocardium were determined by immunohistochemistry. To detect cardiac hypertrophy, immunohistochemistry of collagen type I, collagen type III, and Picrosirius Red staining were performed, and cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area was measured.ResultsAfter 12 weeks STZ injection, blood glucose increased significantly and remained consistently elevated. EPO treatment significantly improved cardiac contractility and reduced diastolic dysfunction. Rats receiving the EPO injection showed a significant increase in circulating EPCs (27.85 ± 3.43%, P < 0.01) compared with diabetic untreated animals. EPO injection significantly increased capillary density as well as EPOR and VEGF expression in left ventricular myocardial tissue from diabetic rats. Moreover, EPO inhibited interstitial collagen deposition and reduced TGF-β expression.ConclusionsTreatment with EPO protects cardiac tissue in diabetic animals by increasing VEGF and EPOR expression levels, leading to improved revascularization and the inhibition of cardiac fibrosis.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a complex disease, leading to the damage of multisystems. The pathogen that triggers this sophisticated disease is still unknown since it was first reported in 1967. To increase our knowledge on the effects of genes in KD, we extracted statistically significant genes so far associated with this mysterious illness from candidate gene studies and genome-wide association studies. These genes contributed to susceptibility to KD, coronary artery lesions, resistance to initial IVIG treatment, incomplete KD, and so on. Gene ontology category and pathways were analyzed for relationships among these statistically significant genes. These genes were represented in a variety of functional categories, including immune response, inflammatory response, and cellular calcium ion homeostasis. They were mainly enriched in the pathway of immune response. We further highlighted the compelling immune pathway of NF-AT signal and leukocyte interactions combined with another transcription factor NF-κB in the pathogenesis of KD. STRING analysis, a network analysis focusing on protein interactions, validated close contact between these genes and implied the importance of this pathway. This data will contribute to understanding pathogenesis of KD.

Five 1-(p-substituted phenyl)-1,4-dihydronicotinamides (GPNAH-1,4-H(2)) and five 1-(p-substituted phenyl)-1,2-dihydronicotinamides (GPNAH-1,2-H(2)) were synthesized, which were used to mimic NAD(P)H coenzyme and its 1,2-dihydroisomer reductions, respectively. When the 1,4-dihydropyridine (GPNAH-1,4-H(2)) and the 1,2-dihydroisomer (GPNAH-1,2-H(2)) were treated with p-trifluoromethylbenzylidenemalononitrile (S) as a hydride acceptor, both reactions gave the same products: pyridinium derivative (GPNA(+)) and carbanion SH(-) by a hydride one-step transfer. Thermodynamic analysis on the two reactions shows that the hydride transfer from the 1,2-dihydropyridine is much more favorable than the hydride transfer from the corresponding 1,4-dihydroisomer, but the kinetic examination displays that the former reaction is remarkably slower than the latter reaction, which is mainly due to much more negative activation entropy for the former reaction. When the formed pyridinium derivative (GPNA(+)) was treated with SH(-), the major reduced product was the corresponding 1,4-dihydropyridine along with a trace of the 1,2-dihydroisomer. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses on the hydride transfer from SH(-) to GPNA(+) all suggest that the 4-position on the pyridinium ring in GPNA(+) is much easier to accept the hydride than the 2-position, which indicates that when the 1,4-dihydropyridine is used the hydride donor to react with S, the formed pyridinium derivative GPNA(+) may return to the 1,4-dihydropyridine by a hydride transfer cycle; but when the 1,2-dihydropyridine is used as the hydride donor, the formed pyridinium derivative can not return to the 1,2-dihydropyridine by the hydride reverse transfer from SH(-) to GPNA(+). These results clearly show that the hydride-transfer cycle is favorable for the 1,4-dihydronicotinamides, but unfavorable for the corresponding 1,2-dihydroisomers.
