Background: West Nile virus (WNV) was first sequenced in Brazil in 2019, when it was isolated from a horse in the Espírito Santo state. Despite multiple studies reporting serological evidence suggestive of past circulation since 2004, WNV remains a low priority for surveillance and public health, such that much is still unknown about its genomic diversity, evolution, and transmission in the country. Methods: A combination of diagnostic assays, nanopore sequencing, phylogenetic inference, and epidemiological modeling are here used to provide a holistic overview of what is known about WNV in Brazil. Results: We report new genetic evidence of WNV circulation in southern (Minas Gerais, São Paulo) and northeastern (Piauí) states isolated from equine red blood cells. A novel, climate-informed theoretical perspective of the potential transmission of WNV across the country highlights the state of Piauí as particularly relevant for WNV epidemiology in Brazil, although it does not reject possible circulation in other states. Conclusion: Our output demonstrates the scarceness of existing data, and that although there is sufficient evidence for the circulation and persistence of the virus, much is still unknown on its local evolution, epidemiology, and activity. We advocate for a shift to active surveillance, to ensure adequate preparedness for future epidemics with spill-over potential to humans.
Foreign body syndrome is an inflammatory disease, caused by the ingestion of a perforating foreign body, most often metallic. Adult dairy cattle are most affected. Depending on the direction that the foreign body takes when it reaches the reticulum, it can reach adjacent organs and cause reticulum peritonitis or reticulum traumatic pericarditis. It can cause unspecific signs such as fever, changes in rumen motility and cardiac signs. The diagnosis consists of observation of clinical signs, evidence of pain, ultrasound, hematology, blood biochemistry and analysis of cavitary effusions. The treatments normally used are conservative, with or without magnet and rumenotomy.
We report genetic evidence of WNV circulation from southern and northeastern Brazilian states isolated from equine red blood cells. In the northeastern state the tenth human case was also detected, presenting neuroinvasive disease compatible with WNV infection. Our analyses demonstrate that much is still unknown on the virus’ local epidemiology. We advocate for a shift to active surveillance, to ensure adequate control for future epidemics with spill-over potential to humans.
Background: Leptospirosis is a cosmopolitan zoonosis caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira spp. and it is considered one of the main causes of reproductive problems in cattle. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of anti-Leptospira antibodies and identify the prevalent serovars and risk factors associated with infection in cattle herds, in the microregion of Floriano, Piaui State, Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results:A total of 414 bovine sera samples were collected (390 females aged over 24 months and 24 bulls) from 22 properties (farms) in the municipalities that compose the study area. The samples were analyzed using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) to detect anti-Leptospira antibodies from 23 pathogenic serovars. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied in each farm to evaluate the risk factors, using a univariate analysis of the variables of interest, by Pearson's Chi-square test (χ 2 ) or Fisher's exact test, when it was necessary. Then, each independent variable was crossed with the dependent variable and those that presented statistical significance <0.20 were selected for multivariate analysis, using logistic regression, adopting a significance level of 5%. This research identified 143 positive animals (MAT> 1: 100) in the 22 evaluated farms; all of them had at least one positive animal, resulting in a prevalence of 34.54%, with 32,8% females (136) and 1,7% males (07), and 8,93% (37) of co-agglutination. Nineteen of the 23 tested serovars were identified; among them, Icterohaemorrhagiae (42.48%), Hardjo (31.2%), Pomona (4.3%), and Castellonis (4.3%) stood out. Absence of quarantine (OR = 16.172, P = 0.024), vaccination (OR = 0.090, P = 0.037) and isolation of diseased animals (OR = 0.006, P = 0.030) were identified, by the multivariate logistic regression analysis, as risk factors for any serovar of Leptospira spp. Discussion:The results of the present study showed that leptospirosis is present in all studied municipalities, in which the prevalence may be related to the variety of factors that influence the occurrence of the disease, such as climatic and environmental conditions, transit of animal, practices of management adopted in the herd, and the lack of information about the disease. The occurrence of co-agglutination can be explained by the possibility of multiple and concomitant contaminations with several serovars. Icterohaemorrhagiae was the most prevalent serovar, which has significant importance to public health since it is considered the main serovar of leptospirosis in humans, associated with the presence of rodents. On the other hand, the serovar Hardjo is related to the chronic leptospirosis in cattle, demonstrated through reproductive problems. A 3ª edição do Congresso Internacional de Estudantes e Profissionais da Saúde – DELTA SAÚDE, realizou-se de forma presencial no período de 04 a 06 de novembro de 2022, no Centro de Convenções do Hotel SESC Praia, Luis Correia, Piauí. O Delta Saúde 2022 trouxe como tema geral: “O pós-pandemia e os principais desafios da saúde global”; e as discussões foram norteadas pelos eixos centrais, a saber: a) Pandemia de COVID-19, b) Vigilância em Saúde, c) Saúde Pública e a Atenção Primária, d) Saúde Mental, e) Doenças Crônicas e Doenças Transmissíveis, f) Educação, Formação e Trabalho na Saúde, g) Inovação em Saúde, h) Eixos Transversais. O evento foi criado em 2017 e nesta edição alcançamos pelo menos 10 estados brasileiros em participação direta, palestrantes, convidados, além dos conferencistas internacionais on-line. Esta diversidade aliada a qualidade dos trabalhos apresentados, contribuiu de forma decisiva para o alcance dos objetivos do congresso que primam pela qualificação do ensino na saúde de acadêmicos e pósgraduandos, pelo fortalecimento das práticas profissionais nos serviços de saúde, e pelo incentivo à produção científica. A programação do evento foi composta por palestras nacionais e internacionais, mesas multidisciplinares, cursos livres, seminários, rodas de conversas, encontros e sessões de trabalhos com apresentações nas modalidades: Comunicações Orais e Pôsteres; e com publicação das pesquisas científicas nos Anais do congresso. O evento contou com 692 inscritos, e destes 42 foram palestrantes que abrilhantaram a programação do congresso. Recebemos 746 resumos para avaliação, e foram apresentados presencialmente 536 trabalhos, sendo 42 premiados com menção honrosa. O evento foi idealizado pela Sociedade Delta Científica e SBCSaúde, teve o apoio do SESC-PI e da Doity, além do apoio científico da FIOCRUZ Piauí, da Editora Pasteur, dos núcleos de pesquisa NUPCelt/UFPI, NAPsiTO/UFPI/UFDPar e NPPM/UFPI; e dos programas de residência multiprofissional RMSFC/UESPI e PRMSF/UFPI/UFDPar. O evento também contou com a parceria de empresas patrocinadoras e expositoras, que tiveram da Comissão Organizadora reciprocidade em suas demandas, a saber: Instituto UniEducacional, WM Saúde e The Nutri Store/PACCO.
This study aimed to evaluate the physical and hygienic-sanitary conditions of poultry slaughterhouses in the municipality of Parnaíba, Piauí, Brazil. Ten slaughterhouses were visited, using a checklist as an evaluation criterion, seeking to assess the physical and hygienic-sanitary conditions of facilities, equipment, handlers, environment, production, and food transportation, during the entire slaughtering process, to verify compliance with current legislation. The slaughterhouses visited (10 / 100%) had no Official Inspection Service and did not obey the rules established by legislation, showing precarious physical and hygienic-sanitary conditions of operation. Most of the establishments (9 / 90%) were located in the urban area and one (10%) in the rural area. None of them followed the animal welfare recommendations. Moreover, seven (70%) establishments had no waste treatment and the residues were dumped in an open area. Therefore, it was concluded that the hygienic-sanitary conditions of poultry slaughterhouses in Parnaíba pose risks to meet quality and the health of slaughterhouses employees and people who consume the products from those establishments.
There is increasing evidence as to the participation of the ovarian renin-angiotensin system in important reproductive processes. The inhibition of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) caused an increase in the rate of ovulation and pregnancy in the artificial insemination protocol has fixed time (TFIA). This study aimed to investigate the presence and location of Ang II, Ang- (1-7) and ACE2 in goat ovaries and the possibility of the involvement of these peptides in previous results. Ten ovaries from goats were collected in a slaughterhouse, washed in buffered PBS, perfused with protease inhibitor solution and processed for immunohistochemistry protocol. The search for peptides was performed using the avidin–biotin–peroxidase method. A strong immunoreactivity for Ang II in theca cells of antral follicles and corpus luteum was observed. Antral follicles (theca cells), corpus luteum and oocyte cytoplasm in early antral follicles exhibited strong immunoreactivity for Ang-(1-7). There was strong immunoreactivity for ACE2 in the cytoplasm of luteal cells and theca cells of antral follicles. In this study, for the first time, the presence and location of Ang II, Ang-(1-7) and ACE2 are reported in goat ovary, suggesting that there is participation in follicular development, oocyte maturation and corpus luteum development.
