At the request of the Town Planning Council of the Communauté Urbaine de Lyon, an inventory of all the archaeological discoveries has been>carried out concerning the Gallo-Roman period in the Croix-Rousse district in' Lyon (1st dist.). Examination of literary sources and the registration of archaeological finds has served as the basis for the drawing up of an analytic cartography which has helped us to take stock of our knowledge of the Gallo-Roman archaeological heritage in this district. Roman town planning on the Croix-Rousse slopes seems to correspond, moreover, to that of all Lugdunum. The growth of this town planning is seemingly linked to the setting up of a vast programme, taking into account roadways and open space for the creation of a monumental center (amphitheatre and sanctuary the site of which is only supposed). Dwelling areas, particularly dense at the south of the monumental centre, include craftmen's workrooms. Gallo-roman graves have been recorded along the roman road leading northwards from the town. Gathering information of varied character, of wich the location has sometimes proved difficult to pinpoint, this enquiry has led to the drawing up of an archaeological map and gives us, at the same time, the opportunity to reconsider the history of a district about which many assumptions were so deep-rooted.
