Abstract-Next generation heterogeneous wireless networks offer the end users with assurance of QoS inside each access network as well as during vertical handoff between them. For guaranteed QoS, the vertical handoff algorithm must be QoS aware, which cannot be achieved with the use of traditional RSS as the vertical handoff criteria. In this paper, we propose a novel vertical handoff algorithm which uses received SINR from various access networks as the handoff criteria. This algorithm consider the combined effects of SINR from different access networks with SINR value from one network being converted to equivalent SINR value to the target network, so the handoff algorithm can have the knowledge of achievable bandwidths from both access networks to make handoff decisions with QoS consideration. Analytical results confirm that the new SINR based vertical handoff algorithm can consistently offer the end user with maximum available bandwidth during vertical handoff contrary to the RSS based vertical handoff, whose performance differs under different network conditions. System level simulations also reveal the improvement of overall system throughputs using SINR based vertical handoff, comparing with the RSS based vertical handoff.
As demand increases for ubiquitous network facilities, infrastructure-less and self-configuring systems like Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) are gaining popularity. MANET routing security however, is one of the most significant challenges to wide scale adoption, with wormhole attacks being an especially severe MANET routing threat. This is because wormholes are able to disrupt a major component of network traffic, while concomitantly being extremely difficult to detect. This paper introduces a new wormhole detection paradigm based upon Traversal Time and Hop Count Analysis (TTHCA), which in comparison to existing algorithms, consistently affords superior detection performance, allied with low false positive rates for all wormhole variants. Simulation results confirm that the TTHCA model exhibits robust wormhole route detection in various network scenarios, while incurring only a small network overhead. This feature makes TTHCA an attractive choice for MANET environments which generally comprise devices, such as wireless sensors, which possess a limited processing capability.
Abstract-Base station (BS) sleeping in cellular networks has emerged as a promising solution for more energy efficient communications, concomitant with lowering the network carbon footprint. Switching off specific BS entirely however, can lead to coverage holes and severe performance degradation. To avoid coverage holes, the transmit power of neighbouring BS must be commensurately increased, which can cause higher interference to other cell users. Recently a BS-RS (relay station) switching model has been proposed where the BS changes operating mode to a RS during off-peak periods rather than being completely turned off. This paper presents a traffic-aware and traffic-andinterference aware switching strategy for both the BS sleeping and BS-RS switching paradigms, which dynamically establishes the conditions for a BS to alter its working mode. The switching is based upon a dynamic traffic threshold allied with the received BS interference level. Analysis corroborates both new algorithms significantly improve network energy efficiency, while upholding the requisite quality of service provision.
Abstract-Existing vertex-based operational rate-distortion (ORD) optimal shape coding algorithms use a vertex band around the shape boundary as the source of candidate control points (CP) usually in combination with a tolerance band (TB) and sliding window (SW) arrangement, as their distortion measuring technique. These algorithms however, employ a fixed vertex-band width irrespective of the shape and admissible distortion (AD), so the full bit-rate reduction potential is not fulfilled. Moreover, despite the causal impact of the SW-length upon both the bit-rate and computational-speed, there is no formal mechanism for determining the most suitable SW-length. This paper introduces the concept of a variable width admissible CP band and new adaptive SW-length selection strategy to address these issues. The presented quantitative and qualitative results analysis endorses the superior performance achieved by integrating these enhancements into the existing vertex-based ORD optimal algorithms.Index Terms-Vertex-based shape coding, video coding.
