Le phénomène du décrochage scolaire s’est imposé récemment dans les préoccupations politiques et scientifiques. Les missions de Lutte contre le Décrochage Scolaire (MLDS) ont pour fonction d’accompagner des jeunes de 16 ans et plus à un retour à l’emploi ou à l’accès à un diplôme. Actuellement, nous ne disposons pas (ou trop peu) de connaissances sur les pratiques des professionnels de la MLDS. Leur activité est souvent méconnue et par conséquent peu valorisée au sein même de l’éducation nationale. Dans cet article, nous analyserons, à partir d’une étude de cas, les pratiques d’accompagnement individualisé d’un jeune en situation de décrochage scolaire à partir de la théorie de la conceptualisation dans l’action développée par Pastré (2011) et Vergnaud (1996). Les résultats mettent en évidence des dilemmes dans les différents buts visés par le professionnel en situation d’accompagnement du jeune ainsi que les concepts pragmatiques sur lesquels ce dernier s’appuie pour orienter et guider ses actions.
