The present article investigates the potentialities of photo-elicitation as a technique in teacher professional development. This study analyses the process of eliciting dilemmas in four primary teachers, whose solution has proved to contribute to the teachers´ education. To this end, the effect of different types of external observers' intervention in dilemma generation, participating in sessions developed with a specific photo-elicitation procedure, is explored. The knowledge pursued in order to meet the study objectives concerned inconsistencies between goals and practices and teachers’ dilemmas. These inconsistencies and dilemmas are tacit and with multiple possible interpretations, and are therefore not measurable. They consequently require an interpretative research approach using a qualitative method of inquiry based on collective case studies. The results show that the inconsistencies introduced to the teachers, by questioning their teaching practice, are enough but not necessary to pose professional dilemmas. Solving these dilemmas led the teachers to change their conceptual and processual beliefs, as well as their teaching activities.
ABSTRACTThis article discusses the possibilities of audiovisual records as research data in intercultural relationships, or those that allow us to understand the Other. The research aims to contribute to the theory that is being developed on the nature auid value of narratives in photographic auid video representation and auialysis of basic realities of teaching that au-e difficult to capture and quantify. Specifically, we examine whether audiovisual recording is a good tool for gathering and analysing information about intentions and interpretations contained in human relationships and practices. After presenting some epistemológica! and methodologicaJ dilemmas such as the crisis of representation in the social sciences or the «etic-emic» conflict and proposing some solutions taken fi-om audiovisual anthropology, we analyse the nature of intercultural relationships in two schools -ethnographies-that support the study completed in 2011 and funded by the Spanish Ministry of^ Science and Innovation: the use of visuaJ narratives as a substrate of intercultural relationships between culturaJly diverse kindergarten and primary education pupils. As an example, we describe how we discovered some categories that allow us to understand the universe of meaning...
The present study analyses a group of students' multimodal productions who are learning a second language within a cooperative learning context using the iPad in a 1:1 format. They turn the act of creating free narrative written texts into a complex communicative process where two modes of representation are employed: written text and still images. These narratives become documents where the language of words and images are interrelated, generating production and communicative processes which should be understood in their double dimension: a) analyse the value the students give to the images in their compositions; and b) taking the narrative as an integrated text, where the systems of representation interact. Examples of experiences using mobile technologies studying the processes of learning generated in school contexts are still scarce. It is important to analyse didactic proposals which incorporate formative tasks in the classroom using these technologies, such as this case.
