Podríamos pensar que la publicación en el siglo XXI de un libro sobre el mercantilismo no pasaría de ser otra digna recopilación de un conjunto de ideas viejas sobre odres nuevos, o simplemente cabría preguntarnos, desde el punto de vista de la historia de las ideas económicas, qué es lo que se debe haber obviado a estas alturas sobre este tema del que tanto se ha estudiado y escrito. Incluso cabría alguna duda si su autor fuera primigenio en este asunto, pero al tratarse de Lars Magnusson, profesor de Historia Económica y en la actualidad Decano de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Uppsala, cuya trayectoria en el ámbito de las ideas económicas mercantilistas es conocida el asunto cobra mayor interés. En este sentido, respecto al autor, el profesor Luis Perdices, especialista en el pensamiento mercantilista afirma en "El pensamiento económico de los mercantilistas" en la Historia del Pensamiento Económico (Sín-tesis), que los trabajos de Magnusson -(1993): Mercantilist Economics; (1994) Mercantilism.
The Shaping of an Economic Language; y (1995) Mercantilism. Critical concepts in History ofEconomics-muestran que son los mercantilistas los primeros que empezaron a percibir la economía como un sistema que intentaba interpretar la compleja realidad económica.Con relación a The Political Economy of Mercantilism (2015) Lars Magnusson no olvida y por supuesto incluye, entre otras, las conocidas reflexiones mercantilistas que confundían riqueza con metales preciosos, y aquellas otras que defendían la plena intervención del Estado con objeto de conseguir un saldo de la balanza comercial favorable. Hasta aquí nada nuevo, pero, cabe decir, que lejos de parecer un trabajo más sobre el mercantilismo, la obra tiene un valor añadido porque tiene por objetivo, no tanto validar las ideas mercantiles, sino más bien ampliar el contexto de descubrimiento que las vio nacer con la intención de proporcionar, al lector contemporáneo avisado, mayor información que, como queda demostrado en el libro, incidió de manera racional en la intencionalidad de los trabajos de aquellos autores que reflexionaron sobre asuntos económicos en la etapa anterior a La Riqueza de las Naciones (1776) de Adam Smtih.Así, la aviesa utilización liberal del acervo de las ideas mercantilistas las convirtieron en doctrina y teoría "demasiado simplista", y que a juicio de Magnusson motiva el que se haya de retomar el asunto desde una perspectiva diferente, tratándolo no tanto como un sistema teórico coherente de pensamiento económico, sino más bien como un sistema útil en el contexto de poder en el que surgieron. En este sentido, para llevar a cabo este trabajo, Magnusson intenta, por medio de un extracto de discursos que abarcan desde el siglo XVI hasta el XVIII, mostrar al mercantilismo no como una doctrina coherente, sino más bien, demostrar que éste fue fruto de la fuerte y estrecha interrelación que existió entre poder político y poder económico.
