Existing perspectives on normative and aspirational control have undertheorised how digital technologies such as digital self-tracking might alter what kinds of control is possible in the workplace. This article remedies this lack by studying the affordances of digital self-tracking in the workplace. Empirically, we draw on a case study of digital sleeptracking in relation to a well-being initiative in a private energy company, Encorp. Our analysis reveals how digital self-tracking affords body visibility and remote management but also creates affordance opacity and an ambiguous space of autonomy and control. We theorise how digital self-tracking in the workplace both enables new forms of aspirational control, and creates ambiguity and new limits to control. We conclude by discussing challenges and opportunities for future research on digital self-tracking in the workplace.

The case of emerging social media practices in a Danish municipality used to illustrate this framework suggests three main categories of contradictions in emerging social media practices: Contradictions between service administration and community feeling as forms of practice, contradictions in organizing between local engagement and central control, and contradictions in the digital infrastructure between proprietary municipal websites and public social media platforms. The paper discusses if a paradox lens will enhance our understanding of inherent contradictions or the dialectical notion of contradiction serve the purpose. The paper contributes to a dialectical theory of contradictions through an analysis of emerging government social media practices.

Denne artikel undersøger, hvordan vi kan forstå brugen af digital selv-tracking i en arbejdslivskontekst. Med et fokus på teknologi-i-brug undersøger vi, hvordan ansvar og grænser mellem arbejdsliv- og privatliv forhandles og genforhandles i samspil med den digitale selv-tracking teknologi. Vi viser, hvordan teknologien afstedkommer, at medarbejdere og ledelse forsøger at gøre søvn til både et privat ansvar og et ansvar for virksomheden. Som resultat heraf bliver grænser for arbejde samt årsager til dårlig søvn, arbejdspræstationer og trivsel genstand for løbende forhandling. Vi argumenterer for, at denne form for måleteknologi ikke kun producerer klarhed og stabilitet i forhold til det, der måles, men i høj grad også destabiliserer og dermed skaber uklarhed, hvilket kan skabe udfordringer i forhold til det, som egentlig forsøges optimeret.
