This article aims to present a survey of ceramic masonry walls pathological problems in the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG), João Monlevade city. Aperture, shape, location and activity are the characteristics used to classify fissures. Several factors can lead to the appearance of them. Knowledge related to this topic is presented in this article. Literature review of the concept and intrinsic and extrinsic causes of construction pathology and fissures in masonry were done. A field survey with photography records were carried out in the studied buildings. The data were collected, analyzed and quantified. Fissures caused by stress concentration in window corners, retraction fissures, fissures caused by dilatation and contraction in the masonry and the structural element junction, fissures caused by floor system overload, fissures caused by thermal movement and fissures cause by hygroscopic movement were surveyed. As result, the causes were identified and corrective management were proposed for each fissure surveyed.
NBR 8800 was updated in the year of 2008. Acceptance criteria of vibrations on floor performance considering human comfort were simplified and only minimum values of fundamental frequency are considered for performance evaluation. The objective of this article is to evaluate a methodology of experimental analysis of footfall-induced vibrations in steel and composite system floors and footbridges in order to check the human comfort conditions. The methodology was established according to international standard recommendations and international design guides. In order to present its applicability, it was applied to four case studies. The spectrum processing provided the values of natural frequency, damping ratio and peak acceleration. All the floors presented values of fundamental frequency greater than the minimum values recommended by NBR 8800. However, the obtained peak acceleration for some cases presented values greater than the maximum value recommended by international criteria. Therefore, the simplified acceptance criteria proposed by NBR 8800 were insufficient for performance assessment of some system floors and footbridges.
This research aims to estimate the design costs of implementing the bioconcrete samples suitable for structural purposes. The bioconcrete samples were produced by adding specific bacteria, Sporosarcina pasteurii. The specimens were submitted to tests of resistance to axial compression according to ABNT NBR 5739 under water-curing periods of 7, 14, and 28 days. To the implementation of this research, it was necessary execution of some stages: bibliographic research, and the providing of better visualization of the theme. The initial acquisition of bacteria, then the cultivation of bacteria to incorporate in the concrete. The third stage was laboratory tests to analyze the new concrete and make reports and data tabulation. The early costs results are encouraging further study.
This research consists of the evaluation of the rice husk ash (RHA) without controlled burning potential in the partial replacement of cement in the concrete fabrication. In an environmental context, the manufacture of cement makes the cement industry one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the world. RHA is used in mortars and concretes, due to its pozzolanic property, with the objective of cement consume reduction in the concreto blends and, consequently, increase the sustainability of civil construction activities. The objective of this research consisted of 10%, 15% and 20% of cement (by weight) replacement by the RHA. Posteriorly, the RHA workability, the uniaxial compressive strength and the durability of the concrete were evaluated. The methodology consisted of an experimental program. Characterization tests of the RHA and the concrete constituent aggregates were carried out. Besides, structural viability of the concrete with RHA were evaluated. B.E.T and laser granulometry tests were carried out in the concrete with RHA and the cement. The RHA used in this research presented much larger particle size and specific surface area when compared with Portland cement. Due to this fact, the irregular surface and porosity of the RHA, the concrete with RHA had its workability affected in the fresh condition. Slumptest were carried out and the results were null for concretes with 10% and 15% of RHA. In case of default concrete trace, the result of slumptest was equal to 80 mm. The obtained results indicate that the RHA without controlled burning used in this research presents low pozollanic property. However, the specimens prepared with the RHA presented a percentage of uniaxial compressive strength gain at 28 days of age greater than the default concrete. At 56 days, the concrete trace with replacement of 10% of RHA achieved the characteristic strength adopted in the research. However, the result obtained was still below the characteristic strength of the default concrete. Regarding the durability tests, the specimens with the RHA presented higher water absorption content in all traces at 28 days of age. At 56 days of age, the concrete with 10 % of RHA presented a absorption reduction equal to 2.4% compared to the concrete at 28 days. At 56 days of age, the concrete with 15 % of RHA presented a absorption reduction equal to 1.79% compared to the concrete at 28 days. The results obtained related to the mechanical and durability properties of concrete with RHA without controlled burning are presented in this article in order to contribute to the dissemination of the use of this waste in the civil construction industry.
