The electronic structure and numerous magnetic properties of MnBi magnetic systems are investigated using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with on-cite Coulomb correlations (LSDA+U ) included. We show that the inclusion of Coulomb correlations provides a much better description of equilibrium magnetic moments on Mn atom as well as the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) behavior with temperature and magneto-optical effects. We found that the inversion of the anisotropic pairwise exchange interaction between Bi atoms is responsible for the observed spin reorientation transition at 90 K. This interaction appears as a result of strong spin orbit coupling on Bi atoms, large magnetic moments on Mn atoms, significant p − d hybridization between Mn and Bi atoms, and it depends strongly on lattice constants. A better agreement with the magneto-optical Kerr measurements at higher energies is obtained. We also present the detailed investigation of the Fermi surface, the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism in MnBi.

We report the existence of magnetic order at room temperature in Li-doped ZnO microwires after low energy H+ implantation. The microwires with diameters between 0.3 and 10 μm were prepared by a carbothermal process. We combine spectroscopy techniques to elucidate the influence of the electronic structure and local environment of Zn, O, and Li and their vacancies on the magnetic response. Ferromagnetism at room temperature is obtained only after implanting H+ in Li-doped ZnO. The overall results indicate that low-energy proton implantation is an effective method to produce the necessary amount of stable Zn vacancies near the Li ions to trigger the magnetic order.

The article reviews the rich phenomena of metal-insulator transitions, anomalous metalicity, taking as examples iron and titanium oxides. The diverse phenomena include strong spin and orbital fluctuations, incoherence of charge dynamics, and phase transitions under control of key parameters such as band filling, bandwidth, and dimensionality. Another important phenomena presented in the article is a valence fluctuation which occur often in rare-earth compounds. We consider some Ce, Sm, Eu, Tm, and Yb compounds such as Ce, Sm and Tm monochalcogenides, Sm and Yb borides, mixed-valent and charge-ordered Sm, Eu and Yb pnictides and chalcogenides R4X3and R3X4(R = Sm, Eu, Yb; X = As, Sb, Bi), intermediate-valence YbInCu4and heavy-fermion compounds YbMCu4(M = Cu, Ag, Au, Pd). Issues addressed include the nature of the electronic ground states, the metal-insulator transition, the electronic and magnetic structures. The discussion includes key experiments, such as optical and magneto-optical spectroscopic measurements, x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption, bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy measurements as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism.
