Les métaux et les alliages comme le cuivre et le bronze utilisés pour les monuments et les objets artistiques sont affectés par la pollution de l'air et les dépots acides. Quelques études sur la dégradation du bronze ont relevé la relation qui existe entre le dégât et les facteurs de l'environnement, comme les composés du soufre, d'azote et du chlore. Afin de détecter l'influence spécifique des plus importants facteurs de l'environnement sur le degré et la morphologie de corrosion des bronzes, trois alliages avec différents pourcentages en poids d'étain (Sn) ont été testés. Les tests électrochimiques et gravimétriques ont été effectués en solutions de NaNO3, NaCl et (NH^SO^ On a trouvé que l'action des composés agressifs est classée dans l'ordre suivant : sulfate»nitrate>chlorure et que la résistance à la corrosion des bronzes augmente proportionnellement au pourcentage du poids de l'étain. Les observations métallographiques ont été faites par microscopie optique et électronique à balayage. Des analyses des produits d'oxydation présents au niveau de la surface des bronzes ont été réalisées par la spectrométrie à sélection d'énergie et la diffraction des rayons X. Des détails supplémentaires concernant le phénomène de la corrosion ont été obtenus en utilisant le microscope STM.
