Summary Behaviour of Cu, Fe and Zn levels in blood of sick cattle II. Changes in lung diseases in young cattle In 27 young cattle with acute laryngotracheitis and 35 patients with acute bronchopneumonia, as well as 24 clinically healthy cattle of similar age and kept under identical conditions, serum levels of Cu, Fe and Zn were determined. Results: Increase in Cu, greater in animals with laryngotracheitis than in those with bronchopneumonia. Marked fall in Fe and Zn in bronchopneumonia. The fall in Fe ran parallel with a fall in Hb, which led to a hypochromic iron deficiency anaemia. The results emphasize that — especially in cattle herds with lung affections — the mere consideration of the blood levels of the trace elements may lead to false conclusions about the trace element status. On the other hand, a low Zn level may be a helpful sign in diagnosis durin...
Summary Behaviour of Cu, Fe and Zn blood levels in sick bovines I. Changes in neonatal diarrhoea In 20 calves with diarrhoea and 16 healthy calves of the same age similarly fed and housed, the serum levels of Cu, Fe and Zn were studied. In animals with diarrhoea there was a marked fall in Cu (p < 0.05) and of Zn, along with a slight rise in Fe. Even when one accepts that the rise in Fe might be caused by haemo‐concentration, the increase in Cu und Zn levels cannot be attributed entirely to this. On the basis of findings in man and other species the hypothesis that the changes in Cu and Zn may be due to adrenal insufficiency seems to be likely.
