This chapter covers integrated pest management (IPM) in wheat, stored grains, sugarcane and tomato in Brazil, and the biological, cultural and chemical control of Anticarsia gemmatalis (which include the use of A. gemmatalis nuclear polyhedrosis virus), stinkbugs and Sternechus subsignatus in soyabean in the region.
This study was conducted to verify the damage of artificial infestation ofthe fall armyworm, Spodopterajrugiperda(1. E. Smith) to maize cultivars at different levels of AI saturation (low, medium and high) in an acid soil. The experiments were conducted in the field, at Sete Lagoas, MG, during three consecutive years in plots corrected with lime to provide three levels of aluminum saturation: toxic (m < 50%), intermediate (m < 20%), and without aluminum (m < 5%). Two maize cultivars, BR 136 (tolerant) and CMS 28 (sensitive) to toxic levels of AI saturation were used. The non-infested plots were maintained free from natural infestation ofthe fall armyworm using granular insecticide applied directly to the whorl. The treated plots were artificially infested with young larvae. The average yield losses due to fall armywom were 848 kglha (17.7%) and were constant across the treatrnents. The highest yield without infestation was 4792 kg/ha.
Li fe Cycle of Phvllophaga cui'abana (Moser) (Scarabaeidac: Melolonih mac) ABSTRACT -Laboratory and greenhouse cxperiments were conducted with PIvillophaga cuvabana (Moser) obtained fronl mature females collected iii soybean (G/veinc inax) fields. ln the laboratory, E cuiabano lèd soybean roots had one generationíyear. The average incubation period ofeggs was 13.8 days and the larval phase took about 8.5 months, inc]uding a 4.4 rnonths period of diapause at the 3rd instar. Before pupation, the end of the abdominal segment hecamc fiattened for 8.3 days (pre-pupal stage). The pupal stage took 25.4 days. Both males and females had an average longevity of 32.9 days. Afterthe sex maturation period (11.8 days) in pupal chambers, adults lefi the soil, flying aI twilight to mate. An average of 3.8 matings/female were ohservcd during the mating season, however, only one mate/nigtly flight occurred. Each fèmale layed 17.6 eggs during a oviposition period ol' 6.7 days.
