Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of the Porapak Q-captured volatiles from the bark of trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx., revealed four compounds that consistently elicited antennal responses by mountain pine beetles (MPBs), Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins. One of these, 1-hexanol, disrupted the capture of MPBs in multiple-funnel traps baited with the aggregation pheromones trans-verbenol and exo-brevicomin and the host kairomone myrcene, a blend of semiochemicals that mediates the secondary attraction response in which beetles mass attack and kill living pines. The other three EAD-active aspen bark volatiles, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and nonanal, were inactive alone, but in binary and ternary combinations contributed to a disruptive effect in an additive and redundant manner when all four aspen bark volatiles were tested in all possible binary and ternary blends. The best ternary blend and the quarternary blend achieved \80% disruption. The quarternary blend enhanced the disruptive effect of the antiaggregation pheromone verbenone in traps, raising the disruptive effect to 98%, and also enhanced the inhibition of attack on attractant-baited lodgepole pines. This is the first demonstration of specific compounds from the bark of angiosperm trees that disrupt the secondary attraction response of sympatric coniferophagous bark beetles. The results support the hypothesis that such bark beetles are adapted to recognize and avoid nonhost angiosperm trees by responding to a broad spectrum of volatiles that can act in various blends with equal effect.

Five principal semiochemicals were field tested in multiple funnel traps for behavioral activity against Dendroctonusponderosae infesting lodgepole pine, Pinuscontorta var. latifolia Engelmann, in British Columbia. The basic experimental design was to test each compound by adding it in varying concentration or enantiomeric composition to a blend of other semiochemicals. (−)-trans-Verbenol was attractive to both sexes. (±)-exo-Brevicomin and (±)-frontalin (in one of two experiments) were attractive with other semiochemicals to females at a release rate of 0.05 mg/24 h. At higher release rates (±)-exo-brevicomin was inhibitory to males, and frontalin was inhibitory to both sexes. Thus both serve as multifunctional pheromones. For neither exo-brevicomin nor frontalin were the separate enantiomers attractive at the low release rate, suggesting that they had an additive effect. However, at the high release rate both enantiomers mimicked the inhibitory effect of the racemates. Verbenone acted as an antiaggregation pheromone for both sexes. Increasing the release rate of myrcene from 18 to 150 mg/24 h to approximate the release rate from a newly attacked tree had the effect of doubling the catch of responding beetles. A conceptual model is proposed for the sequential interaction of these semiochemicals in the mass attack of a tree. Pioneer females release trans-verbenol, which acts in combination with myrcene from the host tree to attract mainly males. The responding males release exo-brevicomin and later frontalin, which in combination with trans-verbenol and myrcene attract mainly females. Meanwhile autoxidation of α-pinene in the host resin results first in the production of predominately trans-verbenol, which supplements that produced by the beetles. Later, autoxidation of α-pinene and microbial conversion of cis- and trans-verbenol result in the production of the antiaggregation pheromone verbenone. This compound, in combination with large amounts of exo-brevicomin and frontalin as the tree becomes fully occupied, results in the close-range redirection of responding beetles toward nearby trees.

1‐Methyl‐2‐cyclohexen‐1‐ol (MCOL) was shown for the first time to occur in the frass produced by female spruce beetles, Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby). MCOL and 4‐methylene‐6,6‐dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept‐2‐ene (verbenene) were evaluated in five geographic locations for attractiveness to spruce beetles. In trapping experiments (±)‐ or (+)‐ MCOL enhanced attraction to a standard blend of α‐pinene with frontalin in two Alaska locations. (+)‐MCOL was attractive and (‐)‐MCOL inhibitory in south‐central British Columbia, and (+)‐, (‐)‐ and (±)‐MCOL were all weakly attractive in one of three experiments in southeastern British Columbia and northern Alberta. Verbenene was attractive only in combination with the standard blend plus MCOL in Alaska. In comparison with the standard bait, tree baits incorporating (±)‐ or (+)‐MCOL caused higher numbers of trees to be attacked in the interior Alaska locations and (+)‐ MCOL had the same effect in south‐central British Columbia. Density of attack on attacked trees was unaffected. (±)‐ or (+)‐MCOL could improve the operational efficacy of tree baits in Alaska, and (+)‐MCOL could be used in south‐central British Columbia. Our results indicate that for wide‐ranging scolytid species, operational evaluation of new semiochemicals should be regionally specific.

In laboratory and field bioassays, Gnathotrichus sulcatus responded to sulcatol (6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol) only when both enantiomers were present. Response was greater to racemic sulcatol than to a mixture (65 : 35) of S-(+) and R-(-) enantiomers, the naturally occurring isomeric ratio. Enantiomer-specific active sites on receptor proteins in the same or different cells are implicated.
