Proton magnetic resonance measurements have been used to justify a proposed mechanism for the interaction of water with sulphuric acid, where the molar fraction of water is y < 0.5. Three different statistical states of the proton are considered, expressed by the formulae H30+, H30+*HS0;and N30+(H2S04). The molarities of these species are given for the stated water concentration range. We have been studying sulphuric acid as a solvent in industrial organic synthesis, for some time.1-6 Previous work relates to the interaction between certain types of organic compounds with sulphuric acid as ~olvent.~'~ Later the interaction between sulphuric acid and water was studied.14 The purpose of this work is to provide a reasonable model for the system H2S04+H20 in the liquid phase, where the stoichiometric molar fraction of water is y < 0.5. It is known that there is a small range of water concentrations near to zero, where H2S04 undergoes autoprotolytic reactions. This is fully accepted although not treated here. EXPERIMENTAL 100 % sulphuric acid was obtained by conductometric titration of concentrated sulphuric acid with 20 % o l e ~m . ~~
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
