The jarosite sample used is an argentojarosite-hydroniumjarosite solid solution of approximate formula (Ag0.78H3O0.22) Fe3(SO4)2 (OH)6. The decomposition process in NaOH/Ca(OH)2 media and the cyanidation process in Ca(OH)2 media were studied for the induction period and progressive conversion period respectively, and the reaction order and activation energy were determined for each case. The results are consistent with the spherical particle shrinking core model and chemical control under the experimental conditions imposed; six partial models and three global models have been tested for both processes in their basic behaviour.
The synthesis of mullite from kaolin clay and two precursors of aluminum: -Al 2 O 3 and Al(NO 3 ) 3 was investigated. In order to study the temperature effect, the system kaolin--Al 2 O 3 was calcined in air in a range of 1200 to 1500°C, for 2 h. For the system kaolin-Al(NO 3 ) 3 , the combustion method was employed, using urea as fuel, and calcined in air at 1500°C for 2 h. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy and particle size analysis in order to analyze and compare their morphology and structure. The crystallographic study revealed an incomplete reaction between the kaolin and the -Al 2 O 3 . Nevertheless, in the system kaolin-Al(NO 3 ) 3 , it was obtained mullite with high purity and trace amounts of cristobalite.
