Summary The total count and the coliform bacteria in raw milk was more affected at 30°C than at refrigerator temperature by addition of formalin. There seems to be no selective action for formalin, in the concentrations used, on the microflora of raw milk. Predominating microorganisms were usually those present in milk in large numbers from the beginning. However, in pure culture Staphylococcus sp. as well as lactic acid bacteria, except L. casei and Streptococcus faecalis, were sensitive to 0.004% formalin. E. coli and Bacillus subtilis tolerated 0.02 per cent only when they were present in large numbers (107 per ml.). Micrococci and yeasts were the most resistent microorganisms even when present in small numbers (103 per ml.). The development of acidity was retarded by raising the concentration of formalin and was more rapid at 30°C than at refrigerator temperature. Formalin was detectable after 48 hours at 30°C when the amount in the milk was higher than 0.004%.
