Der Spannungskorrosionsbruch ist ein Zeitstandbruch. Bruchbedingung ist das mathematische Produkt von Mechanischer und chemischer Beanspruchung. Die mechanische Beanspruchung bewirkt die Aufrechterhaltung der Fließbedingung während des Korrosionsvorganges, wobei eine Exponentialfunktion der Spannung maßgebend ist. Die chemische beanspruchung ist das produkt aus Wirksamkeit (elektrochemischem Potential) und Konzentration des Angriffsmittels, Angriffsdauer und Temperatureinfluß, wobei der letztere durch die Aktivierungsenergie Vorganges bestimmt ist.
Festigkeitstheoretisch gehört der Korrosionsbruch zu den Spannungsbrüchen, zu denen auch der Rotbruch (Schweißriß) und der Lötbruch gehören. Bedingung für das Auftreten dieser Brucharten ist 1. das Vorhandensein von zwei verschiedenen Atomarten im gleichen Gitter und 2. das Vorhandensein von elastischen oder überelastischen Spannungen. — Maßgebend für die Bruchgefahr ist die Abhängigkeit der Fremdatombindung im Raumgitter vom Beanspruchungszustand. Da die Fremdatome die Elastizitätsgrenze und das Fließverhalten bestimmen, führt jede überelastische Beanspruchung eine Veränderung ihrer Bindung Herbei. Der dabei entstehende Potentialunterschied ist für die Spannungskorrosionsgefahr maßgebend.
