Tähyilin usein koulumatkoillani huolestuneena taivaalle pohdiskellen putoavan neutronipommin tuntomerkkejä. Kun tähän vielä ynnätään lapsuudenkesät sotaleskeksi jääneen, karjalaisen evakkomummon kanssa, voidaan arvella syitä siihen, miksi sotakirjallisuus riivaa ja kiehtoo. Miten sodasta oikein selvitään? Siis jos siitä selvitään.Tuulen viemää (1936) on tuhatsivuinen historiallinen romaani Amerikan Yhdysvaltojen sisällissodasta (1861−1865) ja sodanjälkeisestä sekasortoisesta jälleenrakennusajasta. Ja naisista sen keskellä. Kirjailija ja toimittaja Mitchell ahdistui esikoisensa saamasta suosiosta ja julkisuudesta niin paljon, että lakkasi kirjoittamasta. Teoksestaan saamista dollareista suurimman osan hän käytti, salassa julkisuudelta, afroamerikkalaisten opiskelijoiden tukemiseen ja Georgiassa toimivien mustien oikeuksia puolustavien järjestöjen työhön. Teos itsessään on upea romaani käänteentekevästä ajasta ja kriittinen tutkielma yhden yhteiskuntajärjestelmän romahtamisesta. Ilmestymisaikanaan sitä verrattiin jopa Tolstoin Sotaan ja rauhaan (1865−1869), mikä laskettaneen naiskirjailijalle ilmeiseksi ansioksi.Lempisotaromaanejani yhdistää kaksi merkittävää asiaa: yhteiskuntakriittisyys ja sodanvastaisuus. Tuulen viemää kertoo kaunistelematta pitkään vaietusta sotahistoriasta, jota eurooppalaisessa kirjallisuudessa alettiin käsitellä vasta toisen maailmansodan jälkeen. Kyse on siviiliväestön − naisten, lasten ja vanhojen miesten − yrityksistä selvitä (seksuaalisen) väkivallan, nälän ja hädän keskellä. Romaanin sankaritar, Scarlett O'Hara, kasvaa tuhannen sivun aikana nuoresta itsekkäästä tytöstä itsenäiseksi bisnesnaiseksi ja törmäilee lähes joka välissä yhteisönsä naista koskeviin rajoituksiin ja sääntöihin.Simputtavien ja alentavien sääntöjen kanssa konfliktiin joutuu alituiseen myös yksi Tuntemattoman sotilaan (1954) sankareista, vilkas ja päällepäsmäävä Antti Rokka. Ro- Turun yliopiston kotimaisen kirjallisuuden lehtori Kukku Melkas kirjoittaa, miten Margaret Mitchellin ja Väinö Linnan sotaromaanien maailma avautuu 1970-luvulla lapsuutensa viettäneelle lukijalle.
Koneen Säätiö myönsi 1.12.2010 ensimmäistä kertaa Vuoden Kynä-palkinnon ansiokkaasta suomenkielisestä tieteellisestä artikkelista. Palkinnon tarkoituksena on tukea suomenkielistä tieteellistä kirjoittamista ja nostaa sen arvostusta. Vuoden Kynä 2010-palkinnon saajan valitsi Helsingin yliopiston suomen kielen professori emerita Auli Hakulinen, joka päätti jakaa palkintosumman neljän kirjoittajan kesken. Yksi palkituista on Pauliina Haasjoki Turun yliopiston Kotimaisesta kirjallisuudesta ja palkittu artikkeli: Ambivalenssin "arvoituksellinen sulo": Hagar Olssonin Silkkimaalaus.
