Cobyrinic acid, the first typical member in the biosynthesis of corrinoids, was isolated for the first time from young growing cells of Propionibacterium shermanii. Its stepwise amidation leads to certain isomers of the hexa-to mono-carboxylic acids: the acetic acid group in position c and then in a and g are amidated first, followed by the propionic acid groups in d > b > e, but in d occasionally also at an earlier stage. The incorporation of isopropanolamine in position f depends on the extent of the P. shermanii strain in the production of corrinoids. With a very active strain this incorporation is observed already after mögen der Kultur ist, desto früher wird die Isopropanolamingruppe eingebaut.

The mixed anhydride from factor V,, and ethyl hydrogen carbonate reacts with nL-2-amino-1-methylethyl sodium hydrogen phosphate to give the phosphoric acid monoester of factor B (containing racemic 1-amino-2-propanol). Compounds of this type are believed to be intermediates in the biosynthesis of cobalamines.
