The biphenylenes with the hitherto shortest bridge in the 1,8‐position, the sulfur compounds 1a and 1b, could be prepared for the first time in a one‐step reaction. X‐ray structure analyses and calculations both indicate a severe trapezoidaldistartion of the four‐membered ring; C4a–C4b is ca.155 pm, C8–C8b only ca. 146 pm in length! The biphenylene skeleton remains completely planar (1a, X = 1b X = SO2).
160ChemInform Abstract In search of bridged biphenylenes for the study of added strain to the four-membered ring the synthesis of (IIIc) is undertaken. But on reacting dibromide (Ia) with thiourea (II) the desired disulfide product (Ib) (very unstable) is accompanied unexpectedly by the sulfide (IIIa) which can be prepared from (Ia) as shown. Oxidation yields the sulfone (IIIb) but neither photolysis (230 nm in triethylphosphite) nor thermolysis (650 rc C/10-3 torr) leads to the hitherto unknown hydrocarbon (IV). Both (IIIa) and (IIIb) are examined by X-ray analysis, UV, 90 and 400 MHz 1H NMR (barriers of ring inversion 49 and 53 kJ/mol, respectively). Results of MNDO calculations on biphenylene, (IIIa), and (IV) are given.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
