Im Interessenspektrum der Kunstgeschichte sind Bilder nicht allein Artefakte, bei denen es um Ästhetik geht. Es sind in gleicher Weise immer auch Objekte, die historischen Rang besitzen, das heißt Dokumente, welche Aussagen machen über die technische Seite ihrer Herstellung, über Auftraggeber und über die Umsetzung von Ideen in eine visuelle Sprache. Diese jedem Kunstgegenstand inhärenten Eigenschaften treten verstärkt in einer besonderen Gattung von Werken hervor. Sobald man sich auf die Geschichte der Beschäftigung mit bildender Kunst und Architektur einlässt, gibt es nämlich nicht allein mehr die von uns so genannten "Originale"; neben sie tritt jetzt eine große Zahl von Nach-und Abbildungen, die Klaus Niehr, Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Osnabrück, O.
