Unter den bedeutendsten illuminierten Handschriften, die während des Spätmittelalters in Italien entstanden, befindet sich eine beträchtliche Anzahl von Werken, die Texte aus dem Bereich der höfischen Literatur illustrieren. Ihre Thematik umfaßt mittelalterliche Ritterromane und antike Heldenepen -eine unterhaltende Abenteuerliteratur also, die das aristokratische Leserpublikum der Fürstenhöfe begeisterte. Julius von Schlosser wies diesem Themenbereich einerseits seinen berechtigten Platz zu, als er alle "Compositionen, die das ritterliche Leben ... in seinen wichtigsten Momenten, in Jagd, Turnier, ... in Tanz, Spiel und Minnedienst schildern" zur "höfischen Ikonographie" zusammenfaßte 1 . Andererseits legt die thematische Verwandtschaft der Texte gerade im Bereich des höfischen Romans nahe, diese Literaturgattung einmal gesondert zu betrachten. Durch die Untersuchung von Textgeschichte, Bildtypus und dem jeweiligen Erscheinungsbild der Illustrationen wird es gelingen, neue Perspektiven zu eröffnen.Der zu untersuchende Zeitraum wird durch die erhaltenen Illustrationszyklen zur höfischen Dichtung festgelegt, deren frühester um 1290 für den neapolitanischen und deren spätester um 1450 für den Mailänder Hof entstand. Diese beiden Zentren waren Sitz bedeutender Fürstenhäuser und markieren gleichsam Ausgangspunkt und Ziel unserer Betrachtungen.Die Literaturgattung, die hier im Zentrum des Interesses steht, gelangte in der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts in Frankreich zur höchsten Blüte und fand sehr rasch in ganz Europa Verbreitung. Dabei entstand eine verwirrende Vielfalt von Erzählungen, die sich allerdings auf drei Stoffgebiete zurückführen läßt. Das erste behandelt das ursprünglich keltisch-bretonische Sagengut, in dem die Abenteuer von König Artus und den Rittern seiner Tafelrunde geschildert werden. Die wichtigsten Erzählungen berichten von den Waffentaten Lancelots, dem Zauberer Merlin, von der Liebesgeschichte zwischen Tristan und Isolde und von der mystischen Suche nach dem Heiligen Gral 2 .Im Gegensatz zu dieser erfundenen märchenhaften Dichtung erzählen die Karolingerepen ein Stück mittelalterlicher Geschichte: In diesem zweiten Themenbereich werden vor *) Vgl.
