Abstract. The Semantic Desktop is a means to support users in Personal Information Management (PIM). It provides an excellent test bed for Semantic Web technology: resources (e. g., persons, projects, messages, documents) are distributed amongst multiple systems, ontologies are used to link and annotate them. Finding information is a core element in PIM. For the end user, the search interface has to be intuitive to use, natural language queries provide a simple mean to express requests. State of the art semantic search engines focus on fact retrieval or on semantic document retrieval. We combine both approaches to search the Semantic Desktop exploiting all available information. Our semantic search engine, built on semantic teleporting and spreading activation, is able to answer natural language queries with facts, e. g., a specific phone number, and/or relevant documents. We evaluated our approach on ESWC 2007 data in comparison with Google site search.
Many artificial intelligence (AI) technologies developed over the past decades have reached market maturity and are now being commercially distributed in digital products and services. Therefore, national and international AI standards are currently being developed in order to achieve technical interoperability as well as reliability and transparency. To this end, we propose to classify AI applications in terms of the algorithmic methods used, the capabilities to be achieved and the level of criticality. Grid allows not only to gain an overview of the implications of a given AI application as well as to compare efficiently different AI applications within a given market or implemented by different AI technologies. It is designed as a core tool to define and manage norms, standards and compliance of AI applications, but helps to manage AI solutions in general as well.
This article describes the Semantic Desktop. We give insights into the core services that aim to improve personal knowledge management on the desktop. We describe these core components of our Semantic Desktop system and give evaluation results. Results of a long-term study reveal effects of using the Semantic Desktop on personal knowledge work.Zusammenfassung. Der Semantic Desktop ist ein Ansatz um persönliches Wissensmanagement zu unterstützen. In diesem Artikel werden der Semantic Desktop und seine Dienste vorgestellt. Ergebnisse einer Langzeitstudie zeigen, dass einfache semantische Relationen bereits großen Nutzen für das persön-liche Wissensmanagement bringen.
