Die Kombination von Erlebnisausflügen und Schulungsinhalten wird in der Kinderdiabetologie bereits mit Erfolg genutzt. Gerade die Pubertät ist oft eine schwierige Zeit im Leben eines Typ 1 Diabeteskindes und ist meist mit einer Zeit der schlechteren Blutzuckerkontrolle verbunden. Es ist daher gerade für diese Altersgruppe sinnvoll, neben Schulungsinhalten auch charakterfördernd und pädagogisch einzugreifen, um ein besseres Empowerment und damit eine bessere Blutzuckereinstellung in dieser Zeit zu erreichen. Die Idee war, sich hierfür eines ganz besonderen Tieres zu bedienen: dem Pferd. Als Pilotprojekt wurde daher im April 2013 ein erstes Diabetes Riding Camp durchgeführt. Ergebnis Während des Diabetes Riding Camps ergaben sich aufgrund der vermehrten körperlichen Betätigung massiv reduzierte BE-Faktoren. Diese waren im Durchschnitt nur 50% des vorherigen Bedarfs. Kinder mit zuvor schlechten HbA1c-Werten zeigten in den ersten Kontrollen nach dem Camp eher bessere HbA1c-Werte. Kinder mit zuvor guten HbA1c-Werten eher einen Gleichstand bis eine leichte Verschlechterung. Wir führen dies auf die vermehrten Blutzuckerschwankungen im Rahmen der körperlichen Betätigung zurück. Die Fragebögen ergaben wenig Änderung in der Selbsteinschätzung bezüglich des eigenen Wissens rund um Diabetes, allerdings zeigte sich insbesondere bei Kindern die vorher ein Problem der Akzeptanz ihrer Diagnose hatten, eine deutliche Besserung. Insbesondere ein Mädchen, welches zuvor den schlechtesten Wert bzgl. der Akzeptanz angab und eigentlich von den Eltern zum Camp gedrängt wurde, berichtete nach dem Camp von einer völlig neuen Einstellung zu ihrem Diabetes und berichtet, das Camp sei für sie ein völliger "Neustart" gewesen.
