The sampled organisms were identified with the aid of a binocular loupe and dichotomous classification keys. At each collection point, the soil was also sampled in the 0-10 cm layer to assess the chemical attributes of the soil. The different edaphoclimatic conditions in the Southwest region of Paraná do not significantly affect the abundance, richness and diversity of epiedaphic organisms associated with forest fragments of Araucaria angustifolia. However, the temperature interfered in the decomposition dynamics of the soil organic matter. Keywords: soil biota, Atlantic Forest, invertebrates, bioindicators
The olive tree is perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean region, where it represents high economic, social, and landscape importance, olive orchards being an important repository of biodiversity. The order Coleoptera encompasses families that provide important ecosystem services, such as pest limitation. The objective of this work was to compare the assemblage of families of Beetles between the olive grove and their surrounding semi-natural landscape in Trás-os-Montes. The ground beetles on four olive groves and their adjacent shrubland areas were sampled using pitfall traps near Mirandela (Northeastern Portugal) in May and June of 2015 and 2016. Anthicidae, Staphylinidae, and Scarabaeidae dominated the community. The richness of the families was significantly greater in the olive grove in both years of study. On the contrary, the overall diversity did not significantly differ. In both years, the complementarity between the areas was low, reflecting similar communities in terms of families. Predators were dominant in both habitats; therefore, the surrounding landscape could act as shelter and provide alternative resources to the community of Coleoptera inhabiting the olive grove during disturbances derived from agricultural management.
AbstractThe objective of this work was to characterize the epiedaptic fauna in soil contaminated by lead in the Southwest region of Paraná. The work was carried out in the area of a deactivated battery recycler, which was subdivided into 6 blocks with direct influence of contamination and 2 blocks, as a reference, located outside the contamination perimeter. The edaphic fauna was sampled by installing 4 Pitfall-traps in each plot, which remained 6 days in the field, with subsequent classification of the sampled organisms. To determine the lead content, in each plot 4 soil samples were collected and homogenized for analysis in the laboratory. The plots with direct influence have lead values above what is allowed by the legislation and demonstrate differentiation in the composition of the epiedaphic fauna in relation to the control areas, presenting a greater wealth of groups, greater diversity and uniformity, and the presence of exclusive groups, such as Blattodea, Dermaptera, Gastropoda and Isopoda. The Formicidae family showed high abundance in the soil with a higher lead content, showing to be a good indicator of this condition. The Collembola class showed no development limitation in the contaminated areas, with a high abundance of the group being found in all the plots, especially in those where the vegetation is more developed.

Epiedaphic Macrofauna associated with soils submitted to different uses A B S T R A C TThe different vegetation coverings form a layer on the soil that serves as a shelter for different organisms. The olive grove agroecosystem (Olea europaea L., Oleaceae) encompasses a series of relevant economic and cultural activities throughout the Mediterranean basin. Olive trees and groves are considered important repositories of biodiversity (Rouini, 2008), housing many arthropods (Coutinho, 2007). The community of terrestrial arthropods in olive groves is highly diverse and positively influences the maintenance of fundamental ecosystem services, such as pest limitation (Torres, 2007;Santorufo et al., 2012). The larvae and pupae of an important olive pest, the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), develop in the soil. The larvae drop from the canopy, then bury themselves in the soil, and after development, the teneral adults emerge. During this time in the soil, B. oleae is exposed to predation by ground-dwelling organisms (Picchi et al., 2017). This pool of organisms includes Acari, Chilopoda, Collembola, Dermaptera, Diplopoda, Hemiptera, Isopoda, Malacostraca, Orthoptera, spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) (e.g., Lycosidae and Gnaphosidae), and various families of Coleoptera (e.g., Carabidae, Staphylinidae, and Elateridae), encompassing polyphagous species that are considered potential natural enemies of key olive pests (Santos et al.,
