A family of dinuclear cobalt complexes with bridging bis(dioxolene) ligands derived from 3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobis(indane-5,5',6,6'-tetrol) (spiroH4) and ancillary ligands based on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) has been synthesized and characterized. The bis(dioxolene) bridging ligand is redox-active and accessible in the (spiro(cat-cat))(4-), (spiro(SQ-cat))(3-), and (spiro(SQ-SQ))(2-) forms, (cat = catecholate, SQ = semiquinonate). Variation of the ancillary ligand (Mentpa; n = 0-3) by successive methylation of the 6-position of the pyridine rings influences the redox state of the complex, governing the distribution of electrons between the cobalt centers and the bridging ligands. Pure samples of salts of the complexes [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](2+) (1), [Co2(spiro)(Metpa)2](2+) (2), [Co2(spiro)(Me2tpa)2](2+) (3), [Co2(spiro)(Me3tpa)2](2+) (4), [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](3+) (5), and [Co2(spiro)(tpa)2](4+) (6) have been isolated, and 1, 4, and 6 have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Studies in the solid and solution states using multiple techniques reveal temperature invariant redox states for 1, 2, and 4-6 and provide clear evidence for four different charge distributions: 1 and 2 are Co(III)-(spiro(cat-cat))-Co(III), 4 is Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(II), 5 is Co(III)-(spiro(SQ-cat))-Co(III), and 6 is Co(III)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(III). Of the six complexes, only 3 shows evidence of temperature dependence of the charge distribution, displaying a rare thermally induced two-step valence tautomeric transition from the Co(III)-(spiro(cat-cat))-Co(III) form to Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-cat))-Co(III) and then to Co(II)-(spiro(SQ-SQ))-Co(II) in both solid and solution states. This is the first time a two-step valence tautomeric (VT) transition has been observed in solution. Partial photoinduction of the VT transition is also possible in the solid. Magnetic and spectroscopic studies of 5 and 6 reveal that spiroconjugation of the bis(dioxolene) ligand allows electronic interaction across the spiro bridge, suggesting that thermally activated vibronic coupling between the two cobalt-dioxolene moieties plays a key role in the two-step transition evident for 3.

Reactions between Co(OAc)2 and 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (ampdH2) afford a hexanuclear complex [Co6(H2O)(MeOH)(OAc)6(ampd)4] (1) and a one-dimensional coordination polymer comprised of discrete heptanuclear complexes covalently bound to mononuclear Co centers [Co8(H2O)2(OAc)7(ampd)6]n (2). While 1 is obtained under ambient reaction conditions, the formation of 2 requires solvothermal methods. Both products have been characterized crystallographically and found to be mixed-valent, containing divalent and trivalent Co centers. Down to 30 K, the variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data of 1 and 2 are dominated by the single-ion properties of high-spin Co(II) centers with distorted-octahedral coordination geometries. Below this temperature, the effect of intramolecular ferromagnetic exchange interactions becomes apparent. The ferromagnetic coupling in 1 has been analyzed in terms of an anisotropic exchange model, and inelastic neutron scattering data are consistent with the proposed model. Although the structure of 2 precludes a quantitative interpretation, the magnetic data suggest ferromagnetic exchange within the heptanuclear unit and negligible interactions along the chain between the hepta- and mononuclear fragments.

A simple procedure is reported for the isolation of the new lacunary tungstotellurate(IV) [Te(2)W(17)O(61)](12-) (1a) in multi-gram quantities, with (125)Te and (183)W NMR spectroscopy indicating retention of the solid state structure in solution. The structurally related polyanions [Te(2)W(16)O(58)(OH)(2)](14-) (2a) and [Te(2)W(18)O(62)(OH)(2)](10-) (2b) were also isolated.

The new coordination polymer [ε-PMo 12 O 37 (OH) 3 {La-(H 2 O) 3 } 4 (L)]·28H 2 O [H 4 L = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)silane] can be synthesized by combining equal quantities of two types of 4-connecting building blocks: organic L 4ligands and inorganic polyoxometalate-derived [ε-PMo 12 O 37 (OH) 3 -[a]

The reaction of Cu(OAc)2 and Ln(OAc)3 (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) with 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (ampdH2) under solvothermal conditions has afforded a new family of isostructural octanuclear Cu4Ln4 complexes with the formula [Cu4Ln4(OAc)12(ampdH)8(OH2)2] (Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2) and Dy(3)) in good yield. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak intramolecular exchange interactions for 1 and 2. Ferromagnetic coupling is observed for 1 and attributed to Cu...Gd interactions. In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility behaviour of 2 arises from a combination of intramolecular exchange interactions and the crystal field splitting of the (7)F6 ground state of the Tb(III) ions.

The combination of bridging bis-bidentate redox-active ligands derived from 3,3-bis-2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (bhnqH2), ancillary ligands based on tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (tpa) and cobalt salts has afforded a new family of dinuclear cobalt complexes. Compounds of the complexes [Co2(bhnq)(tpa)2](2+) (1), [Co2(bhnq)(Metpa)2](2+) (2), [Co2(bhnq)(Me2tpa)2](2+) (3) [Co2(bhnq)(Me3tpa)2](2+) (4), [Co2(bhnq)(tpa)2](4+) (5), [Co2(bhMenaph)(tpa)2](2+) (6) and [Co2(bhPronaph)(tpa)2](2+) (7) (Mentpa involves n = 0, 1, 2 and 3 methyl groups at the 6-position of the tpa pyridine rings; bhMenaphH4 = bis-3,4-dihydroxy-4-methoxynaphthalene-1-one; bhPronaphH4 = bis-3,4-dihydroxy-4-(2-oxopropyl)naphthalen-1(4H)-one) have been characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction. While complexes 1-4 possess divalent cobalt centres, trivalent cobalt is evident in complexes 5-7. The bis-bidentate redox-active bridging ligand remains in the diamagnetic quinone bhnq(2-) redox state in complexes 1-5. Metal-catalysed reaction with methoxide or acetone enolate ions gives rise to the derivatised bridging ligands present in 6 and 7. The electronic properties of compounds of 1-7 have been explored in the solid state by infrared spectroscopy and variable temperature magnetic measurements and in solution by electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
