A new family of octanuclear Cu4Ln4 (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) spin clusters

Abstract: The reaction of Cu(OAc)2 and Ln(OAc)3 (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) with 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (ampdH2) under solvothermal conditions has afforded a new family of isostructural octanuclear Cu4Ln4 complexes with the formula [Cu4Ln4(OAc)12(ampdH)8(OH2)2] (Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2) and Dy(3)) in good yield. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak intramolecular exchange interactions for 1 and 2. Ferromagnetic coupling is observed for 1 and attributed to Cu...Gd interactions. In contrast,… Show more

“…[6][7][8][9][10] It is known that multidentate ligands are effective for the construction of polynuclear heterometallic compounds. [11][12][13] Calix [n]arenes are a suitable synthetic platform for spatial arrangement of binding groups, thus providing the possibility to use them for synthesis of multinuclear metal ion complexes. [14,15] Modification of the calix[n]arenes by replacement of the methylene bridging groups with the sulfur bridging groups, thus yielding the family of thiacalix[n]arenes, provides additional sites for the metal coordination.…”

“…Even during the last weeks before the submission of this Perspective, papers describing interesting clusters with these diol-type ligands continue to appear. For example, Boscovic and co-workers have just reported 93 ). The eight ampHligands all bind in an h 2 :h 1 :m mode (Scheme 6); this mode has not previously been reported for this ligand (see Fig.…”
