This article addresses the issues facing White counselors in providing services to Native Americans, whose values differ significantly from the dominant culture's. Native Americans have been consistently threatened with cultural assimilation. Previously published recommendations to counselors are reviewed and the relevance and possible uses of traditional Native American healing practices are discussed. One such practice, the vision quest, is described in detail. Counselors need to learn culturally relevant metaphors in order to promote healing and change and, in effect, must themselves undergo an acculturation process.

To determine the effect of demographic variables on attitudes toward disability. Participants: Eighty-three female American and 89 female Taiwanese college students. Outcome Measure: A conjoint measurement of 16 stimulus cards (representing people with varying disability labels, severity of disability, age, gender, and education). Procedures: The participants were asked to sort the stimulus cards according to their personal preferences for working with people with disabilities. Results: Younger and higher educated women with milder disabilities were preferred by both Taiwanese and American students. Preference formation is affected by both disability-related variables and other demographic variables (e.g., educational levels). Conclusion: The use of conjoint analysis to examine multiple attributes of persons with disabilities may have higher external validity than single-attribute-design studies.

990) reported that 50 % of Asian Americans tend to terminate counseling after the first interview, in contrast to a 30% termination rate for Caucasian American clients. The authors attributed this phenomenon to a lack of understanding between the majority therapist and the minority client regarding each other and the counseling process. Leong (I 986) suggested that there are many cultural factors influencing Asian Americans' receptiveness to counseling and psychotherapy. He reported that Asian American clients prefer advice and suggestions for immediate practical solutions as opposed to insight-oriented therapy. Chan, Lam, Leung, Wong, and Fang (1 988) explained that because of the emphasis of Confucian teaching on hierarchical relationships in the Chinese culture, Chinese clients tend to have a strong preference for directive and structured counseling. Kenney (1 994) contended that it is paramount that therapists understand the communicative and philosophical differences between cultural groups in order to foster a positive multicultural counseling relationship.

R. K. Goodyear (2000) criticized the methodology and results of a study which demonstrated that during the editorial terms of Goodyear (1984–1990) and Claiborn (1990–1993) there was a trend toward publishing articles written by psychologists as opposed to counselors in the Journal of Counseling & Development (JCD). The issue of journal content goes to the heart of professional identity. The authors assert that professional affiliation of contributors matters less than the content of the articles published in JCD (i.e., articles must “speak” the language of counselors and not the language of some other mental health professional).
