Reported in this paper are the results of an investigation made on the dielectric strength of lichen contaminated insulators removed from actual transmission lines of three different countries. All of the insulators showed rather low equivalent salt deposit density. It seems that lichen on its own cannot cause flashover of the insulators. Flashover may be caused only if the thickness of the lichen is very great and/or there is superposition of salt.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
