S The purpose of this collaborative study between a university‐based researcher and a teacher researcher was to explore early adolescentgirls' use of digital technologies in their literacy practices. The rationale for the study stemmed from the lack of research considering (a) how adolescents employ technological tools for literate purposes in communities of practice beyond academic settings and (b) how constructions of gender might influence, as well as be influenced by, particular technology‐mediated reading and writing practices. The New London Group's (1996) conception of Multiliteracies (cf., Cope & Kalantzis, 2000) and an activity theory‐influenced framework (Beach, 2000; Cole, 1996; Engeström & Miettinen, 1999) were used to guide the study. Collected over an 18‐month period, data included field notes from face‐to‐face interactions such as interviews, home visits, and school‐based discussion groups as well as online documents and artifacts such as websites, listserv contributions, and e‐mail messages. Data were analyzed inductively and recursively, with the two theoretical frameworks used as lenses in the later stages of that process. The technology‐mediated literacy practices of two focal informants, both seventh‐grade girls at the time of the study, are highlighted in this article. Two major themes emerged from data analysis: (a) the centrality of multimedia popular culture texts in thegirls' technology‐mediated Designing (New London Group, 1996) and (b) the importance of online relationships in mentoring the girls through the Design process. Implications for classroom teachers as well as researchers are discussed. This article draws on research from literacy and special education, as well as insights from autobiographies and memoirs authored by people on the autism spectrum, to argue that all students, including those without disability labels, benefit when students within the autism spectrum are included in classrooms with their same‐age peers. An overview of trends related to literacy instruction for students with autism is provided. Students with significant disabilities, including those with autism-spectrum labels, are increasingly being included in the regular education classroom for literacy instruction and held to high standards for literacy achievement (Yell, Drasgow, & Lowrey, 2005), but research with these students as participants has been limited, especially in inclusive settings such as the home or classroom. Grounded in perspectives from disability studies (Biklen, 2005; Kliewer, Biklen, & Kasa-Hendrickson, 2006) and socio-cultural theories of literacy (Gallego & Hollingsworth, 2000; O'Brien, 2003), this qualitative study used inductive methods (Strauss & Corbin, 1998) to analyze the literacy-related messages of 16 autobiographies authored by individuals on the autism spectrum. Analysis revealed a key role for parents in supporting their children's literacy development at home, with results clustering in these three areas: (a) parents' persistence in following small cues related to literacy development, (b) their use of literacy to make social codes explicit, and (c) their strategic employment of support to ensure their children's success with literacy while increasing challenges over time. Implications for practice and research are discussed, with an emphasis on collaborative inquiry with learners on the autism spectrum and their parents.

This 3-year qualitative study examined how 26 teachers in four U.S. secondary schools addressed the literacy demands of curriculum materials based on standards from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It was grounded in sociocultural perspectives that encourage study of language in local contexts, including classrooms, communities, and disciplines. The research question asked, "How do secondary mathematics teachers in a teacher-researcher collaboration understand and address the literacy demands of standards-based curriculum materials?" An interdisciplinary team of literacy and mathematics education researchers and graduate students worked with teachers to examine required curriculum materials, plan lessons, and share resources, while collecting qualitative data to capture teachers' understandings and actions. Findings indicated that teachers responded in three ways to the materials' literacy demands: (a) they used the materials selectively to bypass or reduce the literacy demands, (b) they augmented use of the materials with literacy support, or (c) they integrated use of the materials into long-term frameworks to develop mathematics and literacy learning simultaneously. The study suggests the value of using insights from mathematics and literacy to inform mathematics curriculum design and reminds us to take teachers' perspectives toward such materials seriously, particularly when they collaborate to address issues about the materials' use in their own school contexts.

This article argues that editing in the era of digital literacies is a complex, collaborative endeavor that requires a sophisticated awareness of audience and purpose and a knowledge of multiple conventions for conveying meaning and ensuring accuracy. It compares group editing of an article about the New York Yankees baseball team on Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, to the decontextualized proofreading task required of seventh graders on a state‐level examination. This article argues that scholarship on literacy in and across the disciplines has disproportionately focused on the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies rather than on “specialist” subjects such as Physical Education. This disparity in emphasis has provided little guidance to specialist teachers seeking to understand and address the literacy demands of subject areas that often privilege an expanded conception of literacy. To illustrate the affordances of such analysis for PE teachers as well as their literacy colleagues, the reading demands of a particular multimodal text from PE—a three‐part basketball play—are presented in light of key themes from the US Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. Complexities related to collective, embodied, and sequential meaning construction are explored. Recommendations for instruction and professional collaboration are shared.
